Feb 24, 2018 - Bali Indonesia (half way on our journey)

History: Bali has long beckoned travelers in search of ultimate beauty. The island”s rich Hindu culture has forever held that gods live in all natural things- from mountains to streams to sand on the beach, lending the island a very peaceful air. Denpasar is the capital and is filled with temples carved from white coral. The harbor was filled with so many boats all going full speed in all directions. Unbelievable and so fun to watch. One hundred US dollars equaled $1,350,000 rupiahs Michele had a great time in all the shops.

Dec 31, 2017 - Happy New Year

Here we are, New Year's Eve and we're now into part two of our cruise. Our ship returned to Singapore yesterday where some 2,400 of our fellow passengers disembarked and we were joined by 2,400 new travellers. Around 400 guests remained on board for this second stage. Since our last update we'd been taking things easy while cruising the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand until our arrival in Thailand to allow us a visit to Bangkok, the first time for us. The ship docked about 2 hours from Bangkok so it was a long drive there (and...

Jul 7, 2017 - Bali: Ramadan Rammed!

We arrived in Bali just after Ramadan. After 30 days of fasting it seemed half of Indonesia had descended upon the southern part of the island to end their feast. It was RAMADAM RAMMED! At the airport we met up with with my school friend and best man, Chris and Dewi, his Indonesian wife. They had flown from Java where they have made their home. We were driven to our rented Villa in the Canngu region, where Jan's sister Sally completed our Bali-band. The Villa was a tropical paradise. As dusk fell we plunged into the cool swimming pool set...

To start with: nb: mMichael & I didn't know that the fighting cocks that we spoke of were actually such! We both thought that they were just colourful kids pets! Until... The old guy tried to spur them on. At this stage we asked them to stop because we thighs it was wrong & cruel. I apologise for letting readers think we condoned it񏘮񏘳My daughter just made me aware of how the story came across. Today we walked our legs off shopping, Kuta, Seminyak & generally just walking for the sake of walking & looking around. I was actually amazed at...

The village is surrounded by a wall, & consists basically of 2 rows of identical houses stretching up the gentle slope of the hill. Conservative people...

Jun 5, 2017 - Day with private car & driver

June 05,,2015 First port of call was a batik making workshop at Ubud. We were walked through the full process of printing- very time consuming & intricate work. There was only a small area devoted to the actual batik making process, compared to massive area for the retailing side of it𿘉 Next we drove to Kemenuh Butterfly Park, a beautiful drive through narrow streets, with greenery abounding.it was an absolutely incredible sight inside the enclosure, so many butterflies of varying colour & size-& actually flying into us & a couple even...

June 04,2017 Sunday Early morning walk to the beach & then had a lovely, relaxed stroll letting the waves break gently over our feet-we did think to remove our footwear first...lol But while our attention was on taking photos, a couple of larger waves came in & drenched us mid thigh! That's what you get for not paying attention 񏘊 It was great to see quite a few dogs on the beach, with their owners of course- the dogs were obviously enjoying themselves too񏐾񏐾 After the beach we again caught a local bus to some shopping malls, one being a...

June 3, 2017, Saturday First full day with private car & driver: Picked up after breakfast & first went to see a local cultural dance group at Batubulan- the Barong & Kris Dance, which basically represents an eternal fight between good & evil. Very colourful & quite funny at times. Next on on itinerary was Gunung Temple at Tampaksiring ( I'm noting down all these names & places for me to look back on later , when I will have forgotten everything 𿘊)I'm always amazed at the beautiful & intricate architecture, & it's wonderful to see...

Jun 2, 2017 - Kuta & environs & beyond...

June 02 Friday After locating local bus service 瀞We went to the famous/infamous Kuta beach. It is a lovely beach, but I really expected to see more people there- though they do say this is a quieter time for tourists. Lots of surfers &/or surfer wannabes𿘊 And many of them strutting the streets saying " look at me, aren't I beautiful/handsome! 𿘳𿘮 Everywhere you go, people approach you in the streets & start by saying " I'm not trying to sell you anything... " hehehee. heard that one before𿑍 They're actually handing out tickets to...

Jun 1, 2017 - Denpasar-

Thursday, 01/06 Today we discovered just how big the Seminyak area actually is! We walked & walked & walked,& then some more! 𯚶𯚶There are many beautiful, old buildings, some of which are undergoing repairs. There's also a lot of construction work going on, nothing holds back progress . The trouble with progress in Asian countries is that they lose a lot of character & their culture. But if you look in the right places , you will find it!

Mar 24, 2016 - Fly to Bali via Makasar

3/24 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. - long layover in Maakasar. Hotel arranged taxi to a very tiny airport - only Lion Air lands here (see photos) Plane was late so consequently we did not get to Seminyak and Bintang Market (where Mare arranged to meet Michael) until past 9 p.m. due to huge amount of traffic (one hour - airport to market). The taxi driver was good at avoiding jam ups using back and side streets. B & M arranged with him (driver) to pick them up at 6:30 a.m. to go to the airport for their flight to E. Timor tomorrow. ___ Bon & I went on...
