Pausing on our travels once again, Kolkata was to be our home for just over two and half weeks while we were volunteering with anti-trafficking NGO Apne Aap (http://apneaap.org/index.php). Mar 12, 2011 - Kolkatta

Mom just left yesterday after 3 weeks traveling in India. She survived the dust, the smells, the pollution, a cold/allergies, snow, cold temperatures, nothing raw or really very healthy food-wise, loads of walking, tuktuks, overnight train, long bus rides, bargaining with locals, eating street food, ...and ME! :) We had an amazing time together, but I'm sure she'll be glad to enjoy a salad back in beautiful West Hollywood. Tonight, I'm off to Darjeeling on an overnight train.

Eva's Big Adventure

Dec 20, 2010 - Kolkata

We got up about 8 this morning and went down for breakfast at 9. Breakfast similar to yesterday, but the Indian portion was my favourite – parantha – I haven’t had one for a few days. We head out to brave the metro again this morning. Not to worry, we have it down to a fine art now – we won’t lose anyone again. We got off at the Kalighat and headed to the Kali Temple. It was an interesting walk through some narrow alleys – obviously a residential area. We came out at a market just outside the Temple. We had heard that the touts would be...

Dec 19, 2010 - Kolkata

Lisa.... We got up and headed down to breakfast about 9:00 am. Chatted with a couple from Germany that had been here for a week and were leaving that day. They had been here for a friend’s wedding. Breakfast was a set menu served by the adorable young men that work here, but don’t speak any English. I chat away with them and they smile a lot – having absolutely no idea.... Nirm.... We arranged a 4 hr. driving tour of Kolkata today with a company called Calcutta Walks. A driver and guide arrive in a minivan at 10:00 am at our front door. We...

Dec 18, 2010 - Udaipur to Kolkata

Today we head for Udaipur airport with a new driver that Ram had arranged. Arriving early we had time for lunch at the airport. Fairly new and modern airport and our check-in and luggage was quick with Kingfisher airlines. The flight to Mumbai was under 2 hours. We were served lunch and hot drinks. Transferring to our Kolkata flight was not as smooth, we had to go through security again and neither Murray nor I had the baggage tag stamped on our carry on luggage. They wanted us to go through the metal scanner and luggage x-ray again! It is...

Nov 29, 2010 - Kolkata

I have a million mosquitp bites on my feet. I spent 7 hours at the train station in Gaya waiting for my train. It came at about 5 am and I thought since I was wearing socks, no need to put mosquito repellent on my feet. I was soooo wrong. My feet and ankles are on fire. In other news I am now in Kolkata. I am in my cheapest hotel yet. It is about $7.50 a night. It has no hot water, and I am pretty sure it hasn't been cleaned in about 5 years. Other than that it is great. I even have cable. There is nothing on in English, but, who needs...

Kia Shnette 2010

Nov 8, 2010 - Calcutta/Darjeeling

It's 9am on Friday, I'm sitting by the open window of our hotel room in Darjeeling gazing at Khangchendzonga (8500m) - the start of the Himalayas. Uninterrupted crystal clear view of snow covered mountains with smaller lush green tea-plantation covered mountains and valleys in the foreground. We have been watching the sun hit the peaks since 5 this morning (from our bed naturally). Gobsmacking. Getting here was quite exciting too - overnight train from Calcutta to New Jalpaiguri then a shared jeep to Darjeeling (2100m) which you have to...

Oct 30, 2010 - Calcutta - phew....

First the noise, hooting taxis, hooting buses and hooting motor bikes, continuously hooting, even when stationary, spewing exhausts, hooting, tooting, blasting. Roads packed full to capacity and more, footpaths crammed with stalls selling absolutely everything, crammed with people, shuffling, barging, walking both on the path and road circumnavigating pot holes, speeding cars (unlike Asia they drive dead straight here, if you're in the way you get bowled), men urinating, beggars, shop keepers. So many people (14m actually), all moving about...
