Sep 18, 2004 - I'm finally here in Kolkata, India!
Hello Yall... OH MY GAWD is all I can say right now about Kolkata (Calcutta)! I am trying to find a neutral word to describe but I can't just think of anything else except squalor. I was truly unprepared for the full effect of so much poverty! I was totally shocked and so was Tets when we rode in the old fashioned cab (must be 50's but I am gonna let Rob tell me whenever he had the chance of seeing the pictures) and immediately went thru snarling traffic outside the airport with which seemed like a million cars competing to have a head...Jump to full entry
Sep 10, 2004 - California, Here I Go...
There is one activity conspicuously absent in every guidebook writer's life: sleep. Eight days before touching down in India, I had the odd experience of actually flying home to attend my own going-away party. Within moments of getting there, I received an email from a Lonely Planet editor in Melbourne, Australia, letting me know that my author queries - which are designed to double (and triple!) check my research and ensure that our guidebook text and maps are accurate before they are published - were ready for my work on the upcoming...Jump to full entry
Jul 12, 2004 - Calcutta
Calcutta (or Kolkata as it is now known by its old Bengali name) is an amazing place. The 7th most populated city in the world has 13m people living here and another 5m travelling in from the surrounding countryside each day. And it seems that all 18m people are out on the streets at the same time. It is a place full of life and vitality as people go about their daily business: selling their wares, carrying goods to the market, plying their crafts on side streets from ramshakle huts, washing in the street etc etc. Put 18m people in London,...Jump to full entry
May 14, 2004 - Darjeeling
I had hoped to travel direct from Agra to Darjeeling, but with it being Indian summer vacations all of the trains were fully booked so I had to return to Delhi to reserve my tickets. Even though I was purchasing my return ticket about ten days in advance I could still only get on a waiting list for a ticket. The train journey from Delhi was miserable. I will never understand how transport ticketing in India works. Even though I had a reserved seat I still shared the 6 person area in which I was sat with 11 others, most of whom did not have...Jump to full entry
Sep 4, 2002 - Calcuta
