Oct 10, 2009 - Nainital

Nainital was established by the British during the good old days of the Raj, because apparently the scenery reminded them of the English Lake District. I think perhaps they must have been southerners, but there is some similarity. A big lake, some large hills. These days Nainital is exclusively the haunt of the Indian tourist – traveling to escape the oppressive heat of the south - and everything here caters to this. Boat rides, restaurants, Kasmiri shawl and carpet shops. It is a very nice place to relax, but I did feel like the odd man...

Asia Journey

Oct 9, 2009 - Delhi to Halwani to Nainital

To continue my journey from Kashmir to the border with Nepal I took a train from Old Delhi station to Haldwani, then a bus from Haldwani to Nainital. The train got in to Haldwani late, so there were no buses or even taxis going to Nainital. I crashed in one of the worst - although cheapest - guest houses I have yet stayed in. There was stuff crawling everywhere. Out at 4:00 a.m. and on a 5:00 a.m. bus to Nainital. The bus is the one pictured in the next log - "CSI India"....

Jun 13, 2005 - Delhi Belly in Nainital

Hi Everyone, Well, it looks like I am behind in my online journaling...sorry! I still have to write about my incredible night in Delhi, and my experiences teaching thus far....but I am sick! Really sick..well, maybe not tragically sick, but just enough to wipe me out and have me run to the bathroom at the most inconvenient times..so I guess I have come down with the traveler's obligatory "Delhi Belly." It started Friday morning, and so I missed school that day. That night we (me and five others and a hired driver) left for Nainital, about...

Namaste!

May 24, 2005 - In search of a cool breeze... (PICTURES COMING LATER)

...and a Himalayan view, we headed to Nainital. Sitting at about 2000 meters at the threshold of the Himalayas, we figured we were off to the right place. Our first Indian train journey was uneventful and we arrived early in the morning, to find ourselves in a small town dotting the hills around a holy lake filled to the brim with vacationing Indian upper crust. It was a fairly charming little town with an 'infinity-view' lake and no Himalayan views. Despite a cable car trip and an early morning, monkey and dog filled hike, it was too hazy...
