Then off to Fatehpur Sikri, a huge fort/city complex built by one of the Mughal kings -- Akbar probably the most famous--in the late 1500s. It was the capital of the Mughal empire and then suddenly abandoned after only 15 years. There is a good deal of speculation as to why it was abandoned. The traditional story is that they ran out of water, more current scholarship says the water story is all hokum, and that it was just the whim and ways of the Mughal people who were quite nomadic.
