Jan 24, 2012 - Coonoor

After leaving Munnar we decided to do something touristy and take an old steam train that climbs through the hill stations and tea plantations. We travelled by bus for an entire day to get to Mettupalayam, the town where the train departs from. Although riding the train is a popular tourist activity, the train lacks the creature comforts that tourist attractions usually provide. Ten people were crammed into a tiny car that was clearly built for five, and there was no place to put our luggage. Thankfully we met some really cool Canadians,...

Amy & Adam in Asia

Jan 11, 2012 - Madurai

We were due to leave at 9am so with a late arrival and a later start looked forward to a bit of a lie-in.  No chance.  5am and the music from the temple started.   As it is a religious festival and pilgrimage period until 15 Jan, the music apparently started earlier and lasted longer than normal.  We were told it went on for two hours (we think we got back to sleep!) and also managed to drown out another call to prayer in a different part of the city as well - Hindu temple and Muslim call to prayer.  And the good news is we get it all again...

Jan 9, 2012 - Cycling round temples

Today we set off at 830am on our cycling tour of the ancient rock temples of Mamallapuram - where we are staying so no bus trip today!  It is quite a backpackers resort, but there are also some more upmarket resorts a bit outside the town.  There are 14 cave temples and 16 other carved monuments around the town.  Also there are a couple of temples under the sea, but were only seen after the 2004 tsunami receded.  The bikes were interesting - no tread on the tyres, and on the way to the second temple I heard what sounded like a firecracker...

Jan 7, 2012 - Overnight train

oday was an early wakeup call - not through choice but the mosque was right behind our hotel (so we found out later!) and the call to prayer was at 550am!! And we didn't get much sleep as it's Gs turn to be ill - starting at 1am! We met the group at 830 having checked out of the hotel but leaving our bags in storage all day.  We'd said goodbye to our driver last night.  Interesting mix on his minibus - on the windscreen a verse from Psalms " the Lord will keep your going and your coming in" but on the drivers window a Playboy sticker -...

Jan 4, 2012 - Jungle Gym

Today we were due to leave at 830 for our full day out.  But breakfast at the hotel was Fawlty Towersesque and it took nearly an hour to get toast.  So we ended up leaving at 915 - still at least we were all together and couldn't blame one person on the trip as so often happens! We then had about an hour in the bus to head to the waterfalls, and the plan was to see them, a cave, have lunch, go to a tribal village and back to the hotel.  This was the first trip of the changed itinerary so in a way we were guinea pigs, and after our...

Dec 31, 2011 - Hogmany

Arrived back yesterday after another long drive in the pouring rain and there was lots of damage on the road on the way back, houses and trees and lorries blown over and on the road, lots of water everywhere, it was not until I got back and read the paper that there had been a cyclone (Thane) on the east coast near Chennai and this must have been the edge of its path that we had driven through. Glad to be back safe. Quiet day today just trying to get my head round the fact its New Year and in a week I will be not be here, very strange...

Dec 29, 2011 - Madurai

Headed for Madurai today (not so cold this morning) When we arrived we went to the Ghandi Museum, it was quite interesting but being with all the Indian tourists and reading about the history of India and their quest for freedom and what the British had done along the way did not make me feel all that comfortable. The hotel I booked here was the cheapest and also the nicest (you never know I suppose) In the afternoon I went to the Sri Meenakshi Temple and the Tirumalai Nayak Palace, both really good to see and amazing places. Each place...

Dec 28, 2011 - Kodaikanal

I was really cold this morning (went and bought socks haha) - drove over Princess Hills to get from Ooty to Kodai it was lovely but bonkers, small roads, big mountains and mental Indian drives don't mix...... When we stopped for breakfast today I went to the loo, now most of the time you get squat toilets but there was a western style one but it was disgusting so I thought because I was becoming an expert at the 'squat toilet balancing act' (trying to touch nothing, keep your trousers off the floor, and keep your bag round your head) I...

Dec 27, 2011 - Ooty

Each morning we set off early and then stopped for breakfast at a proper Indian type hotel, it was really good but I did get some funny looks from a few of the locals. Journey not so bad but getting a cold so that's not good. Drove over the hills to get to Ooty and went through a Tiger reserve (no tigers) but saw a few other animals on the way. Went to the lake, a couple of different gardens and Dodabetta peak. I did a horse ride round the lake in the afternoon, it was good and then we went up to the peak. When night came it was really...
