Nov 5, 2017 - Bikaner

Sunday 5th November 2017 Bikaner and Karni Mata Temple (Rat Temple) Today we had breakfast and were met by our guide at the hotel at 9:00am. We drove 32 kms to the Karni Mata Temple (Rat Temple) at Deshnok. The visit to this temple was the reason for this trip. Lynn has always wanted to visit there since she saw it on an episode of The Amazing Race. We took our shoes off (as you always have to) and entered the temple with many others who come to worship and also to see the rats that inhabit this temple. They are holy and there are thousands...

Nov 4, 2017 - Jaisalmer to Bikaner

Saturday 4th November 2017 Jaisalmer to Bikaner Up on the roof again for breakfast for another beautiful view of Jaisalmer Fort on a lovely morning. Lynn saved her toast for the mother dog we had seen from the roof, she has 10 very lively puppies. The dog was happy to receive the toast and quickly ate it. The hotel manager told her that they feed the dog and give the puppies milk, but we wondered what would become of them – so many dogs on the streets of India. The manager of the hotel gave us a present of 2 very beautiful cushion covers...

Feb 5, 2016 - Train to Bikaner

2/5   We anticipated going to Bikaner by bus since the LP said that there were at least 3/day and our experience so far was that they usually left in the a.m. A short walk from our hotel and we were at the govt. bus station shortly after 9. We were informed the only day bus left at 7 and the only other bus was a private luxury one at 2 p.m.!  A tuk tuk driver then told us about the train which he said leaves at 10 a.m. He drove us there and by 9:30 we were on it...it departed promptly at 10:10 the announced time. This was a local, which...

Oct 29, 2012 - Bikaner, India

October 23, 2012, Mom had a rat in her room last night. She heard something around 5am and saw it. She opened the door and it ran out. It was just a small one. She couldn’t get back to sleep. She told the desk boy but he didn’t speak too much English and Mom has a hard time understanding the thick accent. She waited to the morning staff arrived and changed rooms. I too had some strange sound when I first entered my room. I looked around and just though it was one of the pigeons outside. But after awhile I knew it was something in my room....

Jan 16, 2012 - Tasting real indian life

My Big Trip

Jan 6, 2012 - Jan 5 Jaisalmer - Bikaner

Day 9 Jaisalmer - Bikaner Today is basically a transport section we have 333km to travel to Bikaner. On Indian roads this is likely to take all day. In fact we left at 8:30 and arrived at the Laxmi Niwas Palace (A Heritage Hotel) at about 6:00pm with only a few stops on the way. The highlights of the trip consisted of spotting some small native antelope and a visit to the so called 'Rat Temple'. This temple, dedicated to Shree Karni Mata (The Divine Lady of Deshoke) would like us to refer to it as a shrine to the Lady of Deshoke and not as...

Dec 9, 2010 - Bikaner - Junagarh Fort, Shri Karni Mata (rat) Temple & camel research centre

A day in Bikaner Lisa and I stayed at the hotel, slept in, we both are not feeling well, not Delhi belly but a cough and slightly unwell feeling. Murray and Susan went to the Junagarh fort in the morning. They said it was really beautiful and very large. Different from the other forts that they had been in as it was all decorated rather than having the plain walls. They were a little surprised at one point - when there wasn't any other tourists around, one of the guards working motioned them to come with him and took them to a locked door....

Dec 8, 2010 - Jaiper to Bikaner

We were up at 7:00 so we could have a relaxing morning and get packed before Ram picked us up to drive to Bikaner. We've really enjoyed our stay in Jaipur, but more to see and do, and, besides, we have to get to the rat temple in Bikaner. We met Susan and Murray at 8:00 am to head over to the Pearl Palace for one last meal. We really like it there. It was our first choice for hotel, but unfortunately, it was booked. After coffee, omelets, toast and lassi's we headed back to the Sunder Palace to check out. It was a decent hotel to stay in -...

Nov 25, 2010 - Arriving in Rajasthan

Airports are something that I've begun to love. And this is in spite of all the security checks and security personnel looking at you like a suspect. As I wait at an airport, a sense of excitement builds up as I realize that this is my doorway to journeys through unknown lands, adventures that remain with you for ever. And this trip was not different. After a half day at work, I headed to the airport and caught up with yak there. An expensive airport sandwich later, we waited for our Indigo flight, which was delayed by 45 min. But soon an...

Aug 26, 2009 - So hot, so many forts

Sorry it has been so long everyone! We have not had a great internet connection lately so we haven't been able to blog really. Since Agra we've been in Jaipur for 2 nights, Mandawa for 1 and tonight we're here for one night in Bikaner. Jaipur was great - we really liked our hotel which was very small and new and the owner was very friendly. We went to the Amber Fort as well which so far is my second favourite thing after the Taj Mahal. It's this 9th century fortified city up on a hill surround by this really cool wall which seems to me to...
