Aug 31, 2012 - Mumbai

The overnight train was an experience but soo much fun we were in 6 bed bays so a set of two, triple bunk beds – I was in the middle one which was nice and in with a nice set of people. We sang, ate and played cards until 11pm when the lights went out for bedtime. I went to sleep straight away surprisingly and woke up at 7.45 with a very stiff back but other than that was a good experience for me. Lots of people didn’t manage to sleep much at all. We got to Mumbai at 8am and headed straight to the hotel to dump our bags. The hotel was nice...

Aug 1, 2012 - Dona Paula, Goa

Ok, so India is great but as expected the driving is CRAZY!! Fun though! The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel was fantastic as I said previously. We got a room upgrade which was nice and everything about it was wonderful. Had a heritage tour and the guide was brilliant. Met up with Ramona who is in charge of HR at RAKESS and had dinner out with her at a Rajastani restaurant - different and very tasty. They give you a tray with lots of little bowls on it and then waiters fill the bowls up with food. You eat what you like and try everything and they...

Nothing much to report ~ worked out in the gym, went to afternoon tea for a fashion show, one night went to hear a new talent that came on board in Mumbai; Paul Adams, a comedian from the UK that wasn't very funny and went a lecture given by Maurice Dodson on Oman.

Apr 8, 2012 - Mumbai, India (Bombay)

Mumbai April 8 Easter Sunday & Monday, Apri 9 Sunday April 8 ~ As dirty as Mumbai is, it has it's glamorous side and it's people are a lot of fun - all 20 million of them!  We arrived at 1:00 PM on Easter Sunday and after being cleared by the Indian Immigration authorities (we had to do a face to face meeting with our passports in hand), we were able to leave the ship and explore the city.  The port was pretty dirty and ugly. Seabourn had shuttle buses that took us to the ports security gates where we had to negotiate for cab service....

Apr 2, 2012 - Goa via Mumbai and slum tourism

We didn't visit Mumbai, only connected there for our flight to Goa, but when we flew in and out we couldn't miss the bizarre landscape around the airport which was dominated by flat roofed structures - the Mumbai slums. Here is where the very poor or socially disadvantaged live. Most slums lack clean water, electricity, sanitation and other basic services. Currently there is a rising phenomenon of slum tourism which has western tourists paying to take guided tours of slums. This tourism niche is operating in almost all major slums around...

Mar 29, 2012 - Mumbai, India

Today we disembark the cruise ship. We have traveled 27,504 nautical miles in 83 days. It is hard to believe that this leg of the trip is over. We will miss the safety of the cruise ship and the convenience of being able to eat, drink and be merry within a 5-minute walk of our stateroom. On the other hand, the ship is preparing to enter pirate waters as it makes its way to Egypt and the Suez Canal. Pirate drills have already been practiced by the crew and access to open decks has been lined with barbed wire. There are lots of people in...
