What a special birthday treat! Left Ley at 8am in light rain until morning chai break, then much heavier rain to lunch at the 1000-year old monastery of Lamayuru. After lunch, what used to be a good sealed highway was covered in deep slippery mud all the way to Kargil. ... Kargil is a sad town (shelled by the Pakistanis in the 1999 war) - people are here because they have to be - army, passing through, or nowhere else to go. ... Worst hotel of the trip, with intermittent electricity, poor food and a don't care attitude from the owners.What a special birthday treat!
