An early start today as our train is due to leave Chennai central station at 8.45am and Sanjay is going to take us there. It was quite a way from the house to the central station but we got there in plenty of time, checked that we had the right station and which platform before heading out so Roger can get his daily shave. I resorted to my little battery shaver yesterday rather than arrive at Jaya's house all bristly. Visak is two and a bit hours drive away from Tuni. Those two and a half hours go a little way to completing some of my India jigsaw. They provide a context both on a global and local scale. Leaving Tuni on the world bank N5, I begin by wondering how the India of 8 years ago set about financing this 1700km road, particularly when, on our last visit there had hardly been any cars, there was a very good trainlink and the majority of the population seemed poor. Aug 22, 2007 - Vizag - I can't spell it the proper way!
Today Hols and I, along with Girrie (driver) and Stevenson (NASA accountant) have taken a little trip to Vishakhapatnam (or Vizag for short). Its about 2 hours from Tuni by road and is a city of 1.3 million people. Primarily i have come to buy hockey equipment to take back to the school - have managed to purchase twelve sticks so we will see if the Batch hockey academy gets off the ground or not or whether it will be trampled by Indian politics, bureaucracy, red tape and the fact that the grass is too long.
