Oct 11, 2013 - 11 October - Tirupati

We left Chennai early this morning for the 145km drive to Tirupati. This was supposed to take 6 hours but the roads were better than we thought and we did the trip in 4.5 hours. Our hotel is called the Hotel Bliss and is a bit swish - though the advertised swimming pool was closed for maintenance which was a bit of a disappointment, especially as it is still very hot. The main sight in this town is the Sri Venkatesvara Tirumalai Temple, which is one of India's most visited pilgrimage sites. With an average of 40,000 pilgrims visiting each...

Apr 15, 2009 - Drive through Andhra Pradesh en Route to Orissa

It is around 5 o'clock in the afternoon. I am writing today's entry as we continue our drive through Andhra Pradesh en route to Orissa. Hopefully taking a break from staring out at the Indian countryside will help me break up the monotony of the last several hours. Much of today’s drive has taken us through nondescript countryside, villages and towns. Today is one of those days when it would be nice to have the equivalent of the Japanese rail system in India - with its Shinkansen bullet trains that transform long journeys into short hops...

Apr 14, 2009 - Visit to Largest Hindu Pilgrimage Site at Tirupati

It is around 6 p.m., and I am writing today's entry while sitting at one of the tables on the overland truck. We will be stopping for the evening shortly, but I want to finish today's entry while my visit to the famed Hindu temple of Shri Venkateshavara in Tirupati is still fresh on my mind, especially I have no photographs from the experience to memorialize things. Cameras are strictly forbidden there. This morning's visit to the Shri Venkateshavara temple proved to be unlike any other visit to the Hindu temples which I have experienced in...

Apr 13, 2009 - Trip from Chennai to Tirupati

It is late afternoon. I am sitting in the restaurant of my hotel here in the city of Tirupati, home of Shri Venkateshavara Temple, one of the largest religious pilgrimage sights in the world. We arrived here in Tirupati from Chennai at around noon and had planned to visit the Shri Venkateshavara Temple this afternoon. Because today is a holy day, however, the enormous crowds visiting the Shri Venkateshavara Temple would have required us to wait many hours in line for our visit. As such, we will be going tomorrow, which will hopefully result...

Break From the Law

A l'interieur, trois personnes dorment.

Sep 20, 2004 - Journey to Madras via Bangalore

On our return from Ooty we spent a night with Renjini chechi (Kiran's cousin) and her 2 cute daughters, Anamika & Ananthika in Coimbatore. Our journey from Coimbatore to Bangalore was by an overnight bus. On first impressions, It looked very luxurious with comfy reclining seats, ac and warm blankets. However as the journey progressed, Kiran's gymnastic performances in an attempt to fit in his seat became less amusing; a symphony of snores reached crescendo and the bus made several impromptu stops on pitch black streets. Needless to say we...
