Jul 10, 2007 - Bidar - Hyderabad 136 km (km 754)

Mar 11, 2007 - Hyderabad
Arrived in Hyderabad at about 9am and got caught by a Rickshaw driver. He, as they all do, wanted to take me to a hotel he knew. I really could not be bothered to look for myself so went with him. Fist stop was a hotel where the single room was in the cleaners cupboard. Just wide enough for the bed and long enough for the bed and to open the door. Tempting but no. Took me to another were he showed me a double and cost 250 rupees. Bit more than wanted to spend but none cheaper. Went to reception, signed the paperwork, the receptionist then...

Feb 4, 2007 - Exploring Hyderabad: Golconda Fort and Around
Laura: Hyderabad - another big city. Fortunately the air pollution doesn't seem as bad here as in Bangalore. Don't get me wrong, there is still blue smoke spewing out of the back of every rickshaw and our throats are sore, but somehow it isn't as bad. We are not sure why. There have been some really interesting sights here: the 900 year old fort, the 500 year old king's tombs and India's largest budda statue, but overriding this all, is the garbage. It takes so much away from the experience for me. I am admiring the stone carving on a...

Jan 4, 2007 - Hyderabad, Capital Of Andhra Pradesh
Our flight to Hyderabad was delayed over two hours, but fortunately we were able to call Kingfisher Airlines from the house and check on the status of the flight. This meant that we could wait comfortably at home instead of sitting in the departures terminal of the Nagpur airport. We made good use the the time by going to the internet office and catching up on emails and then having a relaxing cup of masala tea with Kamal and Manju's neighbour, Kiran. Once we arrived at the airport, things went very smoothly and we were thrilled with our...

Jun 18, 2006 - Giggity.(Hyderabad)
Okie doke. So I'm actually in Bangalore right now. Just sat down for a brewskie in the nicest bar I've seen so far in India because there was no power in the internet place.....so excuse any potential misunderstandings. I spent the last 3 days in Hyderabad and I didn't have a chance to go on internet there....so I'll write about that.....and then on my last day here I'll write about here. yes. I guess I'll start from the train journey which is a whole 30 hour story in itself. We decided to take the lowest class coach with no AC because it...

Jan 17, 2006 - Return to Hyderabad
Hyderabad, India All the fun of the family festival came to an end and we returned to Hyderabad with the Raos. Once again, it was good to get back. After a very restful sleep, we went to the outskirts of Hyderabad - first to the temple to get blessed! then to see Mr. Rao's lens factory. (They make plastic lenses for eyeglasses.) About 15 years ago, Mr. Rao returned to India from the United States and began this enormous undertaking. Ann and I (along with Mrs. Rao) got a whole tour of the plant, and for anyone who can appreciate the...

Jan 12, 2006 - A Respite from the Madness
Hyderabad, India A short plane ride took us from Delhi to our next stop in Hyderabad. It also took us straight through our comfort zone in terms of temperature -from uncomfortably cold to uncomfortably hot. (Keep in mind that comfort zone falls somewhere between 67.999 and 68.001 degrees F, so its easy to miss.) Coming to Hyderabad was the central focus -even prehaps the whole reason for our trip to India. For those of you who don't know, Rob Rao has been my closest friend since somewhere around the first grade. We've had loads of fun and...

Jul 22, 2005 - A day at the museum
For those of you who care, the bump on my head is receding. Better than this, today I visted the Salar Jung Museum, a collection so vast that I've just returned to the hotel after seven hours exploring the galleries of a single building. I've had to rethink my views on Indians and museums, since prior to this visit I've always thought it a poor mix. They tend to stuff a whole bunch of items into dark corners and ill-lit cabinets, let the dust settle, then permit building and exhibits to fall into disrepair. So today is a pleasant change....
