May 26, 2010 - Pecs

May 25, 2009 - WOW-WOW

Friday 22nd May. What a night! The temperature in our room seemed hardly to drop so felt like two tubs of lard and then in the early hours the itching began. Between us we have been bitten some sixty five to seventy times and last night they were ten times as bad as the night before. In fact Judy thinks she got even more during the day. We were both jumping up and down and screaming blue murder at 2.00am. At last we got some sleep but awoke grumpy in the morning exacerbated by the shower which leaked all over the floor and our toilet bags....

Oct 7, 2008 - Give Pecs A Chance

Our train to Pecs, Hungary left Sarajevo at 7am. Planning ahead, we got up early, made some tea, sorted out our change for the tram, and stood in the cool mist at the tram stop outside the hostel with plenty of time to share. Tram 1 would take us right to the central train station. We were told that the trams start running at 5am so we weren’t worried. Before long we see a tram making its way up the street. Tram 3 – wrong tram. No drama, next one will probably be Tram 1. Nope, the next one is another Tram 3. We wait some more and the...

May 23, 2007 - Hungary, Croatia, Serbia

We made two overnight stops in Pecs Hungary and also drove through the Capital city of Budapest, population of aprroximately 2.1 million. I wish I had the chance to have seen more of Hungary but I am glad that we had the opportunity to see what we did. The streets of Pecs were very small and the city centre was small yet unique. I woke up early one morning and took a walk down the streets at sunrise and had a great appreciation for the city. There were people sweeping the entrances to their shops and waving hello to passerbyers. Old women...

Oct 31, 2006 - Unsavory Characters, On stage, and off...

So, I have a couple of stories to tell. Firstly, I loved Budapest, and I think that I could spend a long time there if I wanted to, but I saw all I needed to see, and so I'm here in the southern city of Pécs, which is going to be the cultural capital of Europe in 2010, whatever that means. But, back to Budapest. So, Stefan, the French guy I met in Budapest was victim to a classic scam which, sadly enough, Ben (the Aussie) and I were making fun of the other day. It works like this: You are standing on a street corner, looking at a map, and...

Jul 18, 2004 - Hungary 2 (more Budapest, Balaton and Pecs)

My parents left the next day and I was very sad to see them go. I had been stressed before they got here about how everything would go, but we had a really fun time travelling with them. Charlie's parents were such great hosts. His mother made a really great walnut cake with marzipan icing for their departure dinner and we had red champagne (not pink, but red, which I've never heard of, but was delicious). When we saw them off at the airport I felt a little homesick for the first time, but I felt better once we got back into the swing of...
