Jul 19, 2012 - MAYAN RUINAS
Headed to Copan by mini bus. We were supposed to take the local bus but as we were a big enough group it was only $9 extra to have our own transport and took two hours off the trip. Copan is a small town with not much happening the only reason for stopping here is the amazing Mayan ruins hence the name Copan Ruinas. We went to the ruins early to escape some of the heat we could already feel in the air. Our guide, Fito, was the best I've had yet. He has obviously studied not only the Mayans but also world sociology and ethnography and at...

May 20, 2012 - Honduras- Day 1

We spent the morning on a guided tour of the Myan Ruins at Copan with are one of the 4 most "classic" Mayan sites known today. Side note - they seem to have a bit of a fixation on the male genitalia, as names for lots of things reference it. The name for avocados is aguacates meaning "testicle tree", and that's just one of a few examples. We joked while touring the ruins that they don't seem to be boob people really. As Marvin walked us through the site, he talked about the Mayan Kings of Copan, with names like Smoke Snake or Smoke Snail,...

Jan 11, 2012 - Three countries in one day!!
We're only going from Suchitoto in El Salvador to Copan in Honduras, but since the roads in Honduras are so bad, we end up crossing three borders to keep to as many good roads as we can. We stopped at La Palma in El Salvador to shop for crafts, then crossed into Honduras for 45 minutes drive, stopping along the way for lunch before crossing into Guatemala. We drove a couple more hours before crossing back into Honduras near Copan. For some reason, the town is called "Ruinas de Copan" (The Ruins of Copan), and the actual ruins are just...

Sep 20, 2011 - Oh man, Copan!
Hello folks! The town of Copan was built about a kilometer away from the ruins of the ancient Mayan city of the same name. Because of all our difficulties with the border crossing etc. the ruins were closed by the time we arrived. Lucky for us, our fearless leader Issac was able to convince them to open early the next day and got a fantastic guide to give us a tour! The ruins were chalk full of amazing art and sculpture, wild macaws that love posing for pictures, aguti (these really big rodents that look like a cross between a guinea pig...

Sep 19, 2011 - Honduras
Hi all, Today was a bit of a trying day as we seemed to be beleagured with all kinds of problems and delays big and small. We left Antigua this morning at no later than 4am, with the vain hopes of beating traffic going thru Guatemala City. That hope was dashed with the news of the sudden demise of the vehicle we were supposed to take, which was replaced - tardily - by a much smaller van. We crammed in like sardines, and headed off to Copan, Honduras. First, we got a phone call that someone - one of our new joinees - had left their passport...

Jul 27, 2011 - A small town with a nice park in the middle.
Copan, Honduras 27/07/11 A small town with a nice park in the middle. We were picked up in Panajachel, half an hour late, and headed back to Antigua, back the way we had come. It was a 3 hour trip in a full mini bus. Once there we had about an hour to find dinner and be ready for the next bus on to Copan in Honduras. We made our way in the mini bus to the other hotels and hostels where the next pick-ups were. The two Australian girls that were on our Volcano trek were also on the bus heading for Copan. Eventually we made it to the boarder...

Jul 4, 2011 - Copan - Honduras
I am now in Honduras and just spent a few hours walking all over the ruins of Copan. They are quite nice and very detailed. They are certainly not as large as some of the other ruin sites that I saw in say Mexico but definitely worth seeing regardless. Unlike most of my previous ruin excursions, I ended up seeing quite a bit of wildlife. There are some amazingly large and colourful birds in and around the ruins. For pictures for Copan please click here.

May 9, 2011 - Copan Ruinas + Macaw Mountain
Jen has asked me to add that the people of Honduras are much different in their driving habits than the Belizians, ie, much more crazy and horn-driven. The town of Copan Ruinas is a very small, steep town set 1km from some Mayan Ruins. The ruins are smaller but more restored than Lamanai, you can see the space they made for themselves. It is a mix of ruin and restored, the care takers have put back some of the buildings while most are still heaps of stone left after several earthquakes. Macaw Mountain was a treat, normally bird shows are...
