After a 14 hour journey and a night in Livingston, we are now up river of Livingston at the Finca Tatin on a river tributary to the Rio Dulce. Deep in the jungle...heart of Darkness stuff. Spiders, scorpions and all that stuff...Yikes. Leaving Wednesday to head to Lanquin to visit Semuc Champey for the day before heading off to the lake for the rest of our vacation!

Jan 22, 2011 - Livingston
Photos for Livingston are in the next entry. We crossed the order into Guatemala at Corinto – another uneventful crossing, hardly anyone about at that time of the morning. After changing some money (Honduran lempira to Guatemalan quetzales) we were bamboozled into paying way too much for a transfer to the nearest town. One day I will dedicate the journal entry to all the things that didn't go so well, and right up there will be the rip offs or Local Price vs Gringo Price. Anyway, from Puerto Barrios we caught a boat to Livingston, a...

May 20, 2010 - Little House of Horrors

May 19, 2010 - In den Dschungel ...

Apr 27, 2009 - Rio Dulce, Livingston (C'bean Coast) Lago Atitlan
Dennis did an amazing amount of driving (pobrecito). After driving to Rio Dule, we took a boat(about an hr) to Livingston. Livingston could very well be a Caribbean island. Although there are traditional mayan looking guatemalans, there is also a considerable amount of black people. We walked around for a couple hrs and then headed back towards Guate city. The next day we drove through the old City of Antigua and got very lost before eventually finding our way to Panajachel. Overall it was great of dennis to come. It was the first time i've...

Apr 10, 2009 - Good Friday, in Livingston, Guatemala
After spending a quiet night in Punta Gorda, we awoke early Friday morning, April 10. It was Good Friday, and we were to catch the boat to Livingston, Guatemala at 9. Cory and Elaine went downstairs to get their laundry. Once again, one of the maids agreed to do it. For the second time, on their vacation, they experienced the results of bleach on their laundry. The first time it was a piece of clothing that nobody would see, so not really a big deal, but this time, Cory’s Columbia Khaki Man Shirt, now changed his name to bleached Khaki...

Jan 21, 2009 - Rio Dulce, Guatemala
Silverheels II arrived in the town of Livingston, Guatemala and was promptly met by a launch carrying the largest and most amicable official greeting party I’ve ever encountered. The group consisted of the port captain, the immigration agent, the customs officer, the town doctor, the ship’s agent, the launch captain and a boy from town who was apparently just along for the ride. The ship’s agent was the only one who spoke any amount of English, so he introduced his party in order while everyone shook hands with everyone else. Once these...

Nov 12, 2008 - Livingston
November 12th, 2008 Our boat made it to Livingston with no problems. Now to find a place to sleep. Of course the minute we got off the boat we had plenty of guys wanting to escort us. Laura and I and a pair of French girls checked out this one place up the road named Hotel Rio Dulce. The girls decided to stay and Laura and I ventured out to see other accommodations. I just wanted to check out what the travel guide recommended and then decide, our escort still wanted to come with us eventhough we told him that we didn't require his services....

Oct 14, 2008 - Livingston - unlike anywhere else in Guatemala
October 12-14 We returned back to Guatemala, this time to the Caribbean side, to check out the groovy town of Livingston. It´s perched right at the mouth of the Rio Dulce, one of Guatemala´s finest rivers, and the Caribbean Sea. While most of Guatemala is of Hispanic descent, this town is largely Garifuna and unconnected by road from the rest of the country. The Garifuna aren´t strong in numbers per se, but they are definitely strong in spirit. This Black Carib culture is such a nice change from most of Central America with their dreadlock...

Jul 8, 2008 - Rio Dulce and Livingston, Guatemala
Crossing back into Guatemala we headed north towards the Caribbean coast. First stop was Rio Dulce, a small town on a busy main road named after the adjoining river. A very pleasant night in a riverside marina. The following day we took a lancha down the river, via lake El Golfete, to Livingston on the coast - very laid back with a mix of cultures, the majority being Garifuna (black Caribbean). Had an enjoyable day walking with a local guide with a visit to the church (Catholic but with services in three languages), the local graveyard...

Mar 27, 2008 - Rio Dulce / Lake Izabal

Feb 15, 2007 - Livingston: Boats, buses and back to Guatemala
And so starts another tiring day of travelling with a 630am water taxi back to Belize City. I think the early morning diving, photographing the sunrise and late late nights partying meant that we were looking rather bleary-eyed on the boat trip back to the mainland. Today's mammoth journey is from Caye Caulker to Livingston back in Guatemala and involves said mentioned water taxi back to Belize City(1hr), a taxi to the bus station(10mins), two chicken buses to get to the port of Punta Gorda (6hrs), a ferry over to Puerto Barrios in...
