Gone To Grenada

Mar 19, 2011 - Mayreau Island, Grenadines

The program could not find this island. It looks for cities and there are no major cities. Saturday, March 19, 2011 White sand, the bluest sea, a tropical breeze, palm trees, sail boats drifting by…what could be more perfect? That was my morning on Mayreau Island in The Grenadines. I took a book along and found a group of familiar faces at some picnic benches and we just soaked up the scene. Dave approached me with a suggestion that I climb up to the church to take a picture of the beautiful view of the surrounding islands. He was making me...

Mar 18, 2011 - Grenada

Friday, March 18, 2011 Spices greet us at the spice growing island of George’s Granada, the principal spice-growing island in the western hemisphere, producing one fifth of the world’s supply of nutmeg, as well as cinnamon, cloves, bay leaves, saffron and mace. We arrive on reclaimed land that makes up the pier and esplanade built ten years ago. We drive in two mini-vans as our driver/guide points out points of interest along the way, like when passing the cemetery, “We are now in the dead center of St. George”. There are nine black sand...

Apr 15, 2009 - St George, Grenada

I arrived in St George, Grenada in the evening. The flight was full which apparently is unusual so it took the two immigration officials one and a half hours to clear us all. Patience is a virtue! On the plane were quite a few American med students. There is a large private American Medical school called St George Medical School and they were finishing “Spring Break”. It is a graduate program and they do their first 2 years here before going back to the States to complete two more practical years in a hospital. It is a big help to the...

Apr 19, 2007 - Monstrous Number Twos and other perils as we prepare to sail to Panama

Well what a week it has been! Apart from overcoming jetlag I have had to deal with two one-sided games of cricket and a blocked toilet. But more about that later... After a trip into St George town on Friday it was off to the cricket - Sth Africa versus New Zealand on Saturday. The pitch was very lively in the humid conditiions and the poor Sth Africans got off to a bad start and unfortunately never recovered. The much anticipated game became a bit dull as New Zealand ground their way to an inevitable victory. Undaunted, we sought out and...

Apr 15, 2007 - At last we are on S/Y Isabella

We have had two nights on the boat now and today are sailing round to newarer the cricket ground so tomorrow we can land and then walk to the cricket. Our first iontroduction to the boat was to have to walk the plank to get on board, ( see photos) a difficult feat with back packs etc. The cricket match yesterday was a bit disapointing as tyhe crowds were down due to tickets being too expensive for the locals and the match was a bit slow although South Africa lost which is good news for all you English. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better...

Apr 15, 2007 - Grenada, Caribbean

April 15-18, 2007 Due to the overpriced hotels because of the world cup the 4 of us traveling together jumped into a room with two single beds, so it was nice and cozy for us. We hired a car for the 4 days that we were going to spend in Grenada. First thing we did was jump in the car and head to the clear waters of Grand Anse beach, a great beach on the Caribbean Sea. As we settled on the beach with a few beers Damo, Warwick and I decided to jump into a bit of beach cricket with a couple of the local kids, I must say that they really do...

Dec 19, 2005 - Invasion of Grenada, 2005

Grenada 12/19/05 (photos accidently attached to previous entry) As we sailed for Grenada, we passed by several lesser islands, which were simply pretty to have in sight. We docked at St. Georges and the island is lovely with the town built up into the hilly terrain. We were greeted, barraged actually, by many taxi drivers and guides who wanted to drive us around the island. We declined repeatedly, just wanting to walk around. A couple of guys followed us for awhile, suggesting things we might want to purchase at the open-air market. It was...
