Nov 15, 2014 - Greece November 2014 - part 8

The jutting pinnacles and cliffs of the Meteora were once sediments of an inland sea. About 10 million years ago vertical tectonic movements pushed the entire region out of the sea at a sloping angle. The same tectonic movements caused the flanking mountains to move closer, exerting extreme pressure on the hardened sedimentary deposits. The Meteora developed netlike fissures and cracks. The weathering and erosion that followed formed the towering outcrops of rock that now vault heavenwards. That is the geology of the area and is a very dry...

Nov 13, 2014 - Greece November 2014 - part 6

Our flight landed just on dusk into Thessaloniki, up in the North of Greece in the region of Macedonia. Thessaloniki starts the road tour part of our holiday and with the many kilometres in the coming days, we went with the comfort style of a station wagon – a Volvo no less. The girl at the airport rentals desk mentioned a few times that it was a BIG car... I was almost concerned the last time she mentioned it but after the first minute or two of familiarisation we were out on the dark roads in the rain on our way to the city and our hotel....

Dec 17, 2012 - Asprovalta

We said our goodbye’s and left Kastraki just after 10am. All morning we drove through fog around Larisa and north following the coastline; so much for sightseeing! We decided to press on to Thessaloniki, by which time it was a nice sunny day. We took the ring road around this big city and carried on. The drive today was over 300km and we paid six tolls totalling €27.50. In Asprovalta we found the campground where we intended to stay is closed, so we back-tracked about 3km to another campground which is also closed, but has a large...

Sep 30, 2012 - Meteora, Mosteiros "on the Rocks"

Jul 1, 2012 - Greek Monestries

After an overnight stop in Thessaloniki, Greece, we ventured to the Monestries of Meteora. Finding Cheryl 2012

Jun 29, 2012 - Meteora

METEORA: It took 3 buses to reach Meteora and well worth it. To see the monasteries sitting on top of these huge rock pillars. In the 15th century Turkish raiders wanted control over the fertile plains. The hermit monks, seeking a retreat from the Turks found the inaccessible rock pillars of Meteora to be an ideal refuge. More than 20 monasteries were built, and 6 remain. What a magnificent site! We hiked to 4 of them the first day. Through the forest and up many steps to the monasteries. We tried a shortcut through the valley from one...

May 18, 2011 - Thessaloniki, Greece

Wednesday, May 18, 2011 Thessaloniki, Greece We are so glad that we stayed in Thessaloniki two nights. We cached around the city all day and really saw the diversity of the busy inner city and the beauty and slower pace of the suburbs. There were lots of fun shops in the city and the sea was so blue and turquoise that it was unbelievably beautiful. We started caching along the coast line right in the city. A tower called the White Tower was our first stop. Finding a parking place was important as we had read that another traveler posted...

May 17, 2011 - Sofia, Bulgaria to Thessolaniki, Greece

Tuesday, May 17,2011 Sofia, Bulgaria to Thessolaniki, Greece The sun is shining already today and we just had a wonderful breakfast buffet. The guys got the car out of the basement garage and we will be packing up and heading out soon We are having a warm, sunny morning caching in Sofia. So far, no caches but there is a lot of traffic and city driving. We’ve been to the Chamber, which is now closed and empty, and then to a college where we had no luck finding a cache either. So, we are navigating to another possible. Finally found our...

May 1, 2011 - Meteora

On the road and a short stop at a typical tour site where they demonstrate local craft in the hope that you will buy something. Well wrong! Been there done that – saving my euros for the monasteries. Off we headed up the rocks – stopped for a photo opportunity of the Holy Trinity which was featured in a James Bond Movie (Roger Moore being the Bond). Holy Trinity sits on a tall rock 400 m in height. In the old days, access to this monastery was via a net and rope ladder. Since 1925 a sculptured pathway of 140 steps leads to the top. Then...
