May 13, 2015 - Santorini in a longggggg day

We woke up to sunshine - it is beautiful here. After breakfast and service from a delightful woman, it was time to relax by the pool or walk into town. Fira Town is beautiful with the white buildings and colourful trim against the azure water. Fortunately we had a bit of time before the cruise ship crowds arrived when we knew it was time to return to the hotel. We had managed to collect a variety of food and wine so had a picnic off the balcony where the caldera sparkles on one side and the Agean Sea on the other side. Our island tour was...

May 12, 2015 - Rainy Santorini

After breakfast we visited the local deli for some cheese tasting . The young girl was just great. We must have sampled at least a dozen Naxos cheeses that included soft, hard, young, old and everything in between. She had trained as a make up artist but no work so took this job and it certainly suited her. After an hour of tasting and shopping for cheeses and other treats for a picnic we ventured off in different directions for our final couple of hours. For some of us it was one final coffee along the water front before picking up...

May 11, 2015 - Cooking with Anna and Evgenia in Moni

Oh goodness what a day and it's not over! We met Stuart for our drive up to the mountains for our cooking class. We had one stop for a view of the terrain which was very rocky, quite a change from what we saw yesterday. We arrived just after 11 in the village of Moni, population probably 200, not counting cats. A bit of confusion at first as it was clear they were not prepared for us. Although we could not understand, it was clear from the conversation that momma had gotten the information wrong. Not a problem - we went off for a walk and...

May 10, 2015 - Hidden Naxos

it was a great day today. We met our guide Stuart, at the arranged location and headed out of town to explore The Hidden Naxos - not a big tour group in sight. Naxos is definitely greener than Mykonos and as a result you can see a variety of crops in the flats and on the hillsides which have been largely terraced. There will be very little rain from now until Oct/Nov. The views of the small towns were great with mostly white homes and many blue roofed churches perched on the hillsides. Since Stuart is English but has lived here for 16...

May 9, 2015 - Naxos

The wind continued to blow all night in Mykonos. I guess those north winds were just an indication of the day ahead. We assume that is why our fast ferry was very late and took longer to get from point A to point B. Onto the ferry and the first order of business was to ask the people in our seats to leave. Surprisingly enough the water wasn't bad and we arrived late but not sick. The ferry was jammed and there really wasn't much of a system to put the bags on for the different locations. As a result, 7 of us got off fairly easy but poor...

May 9, 2015 - SANTORINI

SANTORINI Wow, this is a hard place to say goodbye to. There are so many places in the world to visit and time is ticking away so it is more than possible we may not return to this island. I'm so glad we came. I can't remembered why we didn't come here when we first came to Greece; maybe it wasn't on the back packer trail then or maybe we thought it would be too touristy. Don't know. Looking out over the caldera is so stunningly beautiful that, given the chance, everyone should see it. The buildings and especially the new ones are just so...

May 8, 2015 - Paros

PAROS Our last visit to Paros, 35 years ago, was a blighted one. We were camping then at Camping Koula. There was no grass, only dirt and on day 2 the water tank ran dry. Angry campers tipped it over to drain the dregs. We walked into town, past little local houses advertising showers and we had a semi saltwater shower. We then went to the bank to change money and had a two hour or so wait in the queue. While we were waiting we noticed raw sewage bubbling up around the rims of the heavy metal covers in the square and then we made our...

May 8, 2015 - Delos

We went by ferry to the island of Delos this morning to see more ruins. The windy island of Mykonos lived up to it's name and it has been blowing all day making the ferry ride a bit bumpy but no one was sic! The archeological site of Delos is unique as it is located on a small rocky island that is 5 km long and just 1300 metres wide. Among the rocks are a multitude of spring flowers. The actual site has sanctuaries dedicated to Apollo and his sister Artemis withe the ruins of a ancient Hellenistic cit around it - population of about 30,000...

May 7, 2015 - Exploring Mykonos

A beautiful day again. After a delicious breakfast at the hotel we were picked up for our island and city tour. Since the island is only 11 km by 15 km it is easy to do in a morning. We headed out of town first and visited an abandoned lifghthouse that was built in 1896. The views of the town and surrounding islands were nice. The terrain is rocky and very dry. Our guide told us it will be very brown by the end of summer so this is a good time as there is a bit of Greenland colouful spring flowers. From there we went to a small village with...

May 6, 2015 - Shirley Valentine, here we come

Definitely an early start today as we were on the road just after 6:15 and on our way to the ferry. The ferry was very nice and we had large, mostly comfortable, unless you are vertically challenged and unable to have your feet touch the floor. The water was calm and the sailing was long - over 5 hours. There were two island stops first - Syfnos and Tinos and then Mykonos. It was busy. Buses, cruise ships, and people!! But oh the water, the sky, the landscape all combined to produce one beautiful image. There is no way pictures will...

Apr 24, 2015 - Santorini, Greece

Wow, stunning, beautiful ....... You get my drift. We dropped anchor off the coast of Santorini and had to tender over to the port to begin the tour for the day. Off the ship, onto a boat then onto another boat to sail across to the live volcano we were going to climb. The sailing boat we boarded was spectacular. All timber. Looking at the main island of Santorini from the water highlighted how big and steep the cliffs are. Like the guide said though, the island was created by an earthquake. This is what pushed it up out of the ocean. We...

Apr 24, 2015 - Mykonos, Greece

Heaven, stunning ........ What more can I say, the place is gorgeous. We docked at 11:00pm the night before and were able to go ashore and experience the nightlife, us responsible adults chose not to because we wanted to spend the day soaking it all in. Off the ship and onto another bus to begin a 2 hour tour of the island. We had Daff and Paul with us so it made for a fun day. Our guide was Thanos and he was an absolute laugh and had us in stitches with his commentary. We visited a few beaches and a monastery but due to it not being summer...
