Sep 18, 2015 - Ferry Around the Aegean Sea

Not a good night for each of us last night, all waking around the 4ish mark and then dozing through until 7am. Maureen headed down the laneway and purchased our coffees and spanakopita for breakfast of choice again up on the rooftop viewing area. After brekkie, we packed our bags and then made our way into Fira and a delightful wander around the many alleyways lined with shops, some of which were yet to open for the day. Picked up our tickets for the ferry back over to Athens then walked along to the cable car station which would take you...

Sep 17, 2015 - Exploring Santorini

After only waking momentarily a couple to times early morning, we finally stirred around 7am feeling somewhat refreshed and chatted while waiting for Maureen to stir. That was around 8am and John was feeling peckish and went for a wander down the pathway to find us some brekkie. Came back with some coffee and the most amazing spanakopita (pastry with spinach and feta cheese). Decided that was to be our breakfast tomorrow as well. Time to begin our tourist gig in our little car up to the north of the island where John negotiated his way...

Sep 17, 2015 - Final Thoughts

Santorini was our favorite spot Mykonos has the craziest drivers There were no speed limit signs in Mykonos or Santorini Our tour bus driver on the mainland was really good at making the hairpin turns and getting around in tight spaces Best pita bread is in Greece Best gelato was 100% Peruvian chocolate in Athens The cheapest water was 1.5L for 22 cents in the Santorini supermarket, also the cheapest Coke Zero for 55 cents The best food and hospitality was Marcos in Athens Best quote (from our guide) "Bring only water back to the bus. If...

Sep 16, 2015 - Heather is working...On her tan or Nibble Nibble Nibble

Our last day and night in Santorini. We hung by the pool and relaxed. We took the shuttle bus into town and had our last cheap Greek dinner…gyros and of course ice cream because it has been at least a day since we had ice cream or gelato! We wandered around the streets looking in the shops. After awhile everything starts to look the same! We did have the fish nibble on our feet for 15 minutes! A weird sensation! But some people came in while we were there and had the very same reaction we did when we first put our feet in! Got the very end...

Sep 15, 2015 - The Best of Santorini

Off we go on our bus tour of the island with 8 other people and our guide, Melina. Our first stop was at the Akrotiri Excavations in the southern part of the island. Some people call this the “Pompeii of Aegean “or the “Lost city of Atlantis”. This was a prehistoric Minoan town thought to have had 30,000 residents. It was first thought to have been inhabited during the 4th millennium BC. From the 20th to 17th centuries BC it was an urban center and port with connections to Crete, Cyprus, Syria and Egypt. In the 17th century BC it was felt...

Sep 14, 2015 - Santorini SUnset

Hung around the pool until it was time to leave to get the ferry to Santorini! The number of people waiting for the ferry was a mob scene. There were actually groups waiting for 2 different ferries. Watched as the “cattle” exited the ferry. WE got on and to our assigned seats in no time. We are on the High Speed Ferry. It was leaving port before everyone was seated. Made 2 stops before our arrival port but they were really fast. What a difference in the port here from Mykonos. Volcanic rock everywhere! Took the ride up the mountains to our...

Sep 13, 2015 - Well Shiver Me Timbers and Blow Me Down

When we went down to breakfast we ran into Ron and Elaine from Australia. We sat with them for breakfast. They have been here since yesterday and have rented a car to drive around the island. They don’t know how big it is as there are lots of small smart cars here. They asked us if we wanted to join them for a drive around the island if the car is big enough. The car was big enough and Ron did a great job driving considering it was the right side of the road and not the left side and that the roads are very narrow and people drive very fast...

Sep 12, 2015 - Immigrants or Boat People

Up early to get to the ferry for the 5 hour trip to Mykonos. There was really nothing in the breakfast room to eat. Good thing we bought some bananas and snacks yesterday for the ferry. The transfer guide told us we can sit anywhere (except I would guess Business class). We went to one of the “air sitting” areas. Sat down and Heather left to look for something and some fat European guy told me I was sitting in their seats (He was probably French) that ours were on the other side of the aisle. I got in an argument with him because he really...

Jun 17, 2015 - Mykonos

Wednesday, June 17th. Our ship docked at Mykonos at 7:00 am. I missed it because I slept until 10 am. Athens really knocked me out. My left hip and leg were also giving me some problems. Again we slummed on the ship all day eating, drinking, reading, sunning and just enjoying being on the water. I enjoyed watching the activity around the dock and on the Island. Nice white buildings, glistening in the sun. Just what I had expected to see in Greece.

Jun 13, 2015 - Our first look at Santorini

Though we had an overnight layover in Athens and an early morning flight to Santorini, the wait was worth it! We are now settled in our suite and trying to figure out how to navigate the 75 STEEP stairs from the footpath in the dark with no landmarks. So far, we have ended up in someone else's villa twice! With the help of the adorable Natasha in reception, we have booked a sail cruise around the island and a wine tour with an archeological stop for our few days here. We might not make it to the famous Oia, but we must save something for...

May 15, 2015 - Visiting Oia

Barb and I had planned to walk to Oia this morning but the winds convinced us the bus was a better option. but before that we visited the Museum of Prehistoric Thira where the artifacts from the ancient cities excavated on the island are located. We were wowed by the detail and unbelievable condition they were in considering some dated back thousands of years. They were clearly very advanced which made us wonder what happened to that civilization. The frescos from the 17th century BC were amazing with detail and colour. From the museum we...

May 14, 2015 - A slow day in Santorini

Yes it was a slow day today. After breakfast some walked into town while others hung around the hotel. Eventually most of us made it to the pool where it was sunny and pleasant. Fortunately there is one heated pool as the other one is chilly! It was hot in the sun but cool in the shade and when the wind blows (which is almost always)! Really quite an uneventful day. Happy hour arrived and we enjoyed our picnic left overs on the balcony and with a great view. We then walked into town to poke around and eat. Eventually we separated into 2...
