Nov 5, 2016 - Delos

We literally wended our way through the labyrinthine alley ways of Mykonos, from our hotel to the harbour, where we purchased 20 Euro tickets for the half hour boat ride to the Island of Delos. There were only 12 of us tourists in this off season, so we had plenty of room and enjoyed the 21 degree sunshine from the top deck. Delos is supposedly the birthplace of Apollo, and was once the economic and power centre of the Mediterranean. It is dated to the Bronze Age. The only inhabitants are the government contracted archeological staff who...

Oct 31, 2016 - Santorini Greece - Jewel of the Seas

The captain altered the order of our ports because windy, stormy weather was to arrive in Santorini the day we were scheduled to be there. It’s a port where you have to be tendered to shore in boats and the captain was told the tenders would not be able to run on our regular day. So, he switched our day in Santorini with our day in Ephesus. It really didn’t help. We arrived to cloudy, rainy weather in Santorini. We were able to tender to shore, however, and once there, we had three options to reach the top of the cliff (and the town of...

Retired at Last!

Oct 30, 2016 - Mykonos Greece - Jewel of the Seas

Our next port was Mykonos. The sun was shining today, the first time since we set sail. We took a tour here. Our first stop was a winery where we sampled 3 wines, all of which were too sweet for our tastes. We had a good Greek salad though and some tasty bread and cheese. We also met Oscar the dachshund who has really big, sad brown eyes that he puts to good use when begging. Roger found a garden of peppers, including habaneros. The grapes were grown differently than they are back in the States. The plants must be kept low to the ground...

Retired at Last!

Oct 14, 2016 - Homeward Bound

As we are sitting in Athens Airport waiting for our flight home, this will be the last entry on our trip journal. The last few days we have spent as much time with Tiny as was possible with his work taking up most mornings. We had dinner at his place on Wednesday night whIch was lovely, met him for coffee in the square yesterday and then went out for dinner last night. In the meantime, we have slept, read, knitted (Denise not me). Max even went for a swim yesterday in the bay just down from the house. Tiny took us to the airport this morning...

The Three of Us

Oct 11, 2016 - Paros - Day 5

Today we are off to Parakia, the port, to just have a look and do some more shopping, hoping the shops aren't all shut. Tiny arrived about 9.30 to drive us in there as it is about 12 klm from Naoussa and we are going to catch the bus back. We can do this! Tiny is having lunch with Jean-Luc so we are on our own. We thought we would start off by having a hot chocolate and pastry before shopping. From here Denise led the way as we had absolutely no idea where we were. We wandered up and down little blue and white street looking at all sorts of...

The Three of Us

Sep 13, 2016 - Santorini

We anchored in Santorini sometime overnight and woke to a beautiful view of the Club Med 2 sail boat. She is a 5 masted floating resort and is something to see. As Santorini is the result of a massive volcano everything is vertical. Our group excursion is cancelled so we venture our on our own. This involved a tender boat to the dock and a teleferik ride up to the main town of Fira. We land in what we actually despise, a cramped crowded spot chocked with junky tourist shops and eateries. We head "out of town" as quickly as possible and land...

Aug 16, 2016 - Santorini

After having a catch up in the at with Pete in Athens , a few drinks and dinner , we decided to have an early night as the plane was leaving at 6am . So up at 4am heading to the airport . After a 45 min trip arrived before sunrise in Santorini , the most beautiful place in the world. We had to wait until 2 pm for our room so after finding the hotel tucked away in the side of the hill we were able to leave our bags and go and explore. I can't tell you how magnificent it is here with all the beautiful blue ocean around and the quaint...

Jun 8, 2016 - Santorini

Santorini is the island we are visiting and its capitol is Firá... An 06:30 call to action today, so we had a quick breakfast and went directly to our "tour" muster station. We decided on a Celebrity tour today, a beach tour that is, because we were forewarned that the cruise ship activity for Santorini would be high, and that the cable car system carrying people from Firá down to the Tenders below would be busy. We thought that our "tour" would give us priority....Hah! Anyway, our muster station, "the Theatre" on board Equinox is pretty...

Jun 7, 2016 - Mykonos!

We're in Greece! I've waited a loong time to get here. We had a perfect breakfast seat at the restaurant this morning and weren't in a hurry. We had nothing booked, and we didn't arrive in Mykonos until 9:30 am. Tenders were to start at 9:45 and we knew to wait until later so the people with booked shore excursions could get off first. I wandered down to the place to pick up tickets about 10:30.....and was given a tender ticket on boat number 51..and they were currently calling boats 5 and 6. We'll be lucky to be there by lunch time. Went...

Oct 10, 2015 - Santorini

Thursday, October 8 After another excellent hotel breakfast, we explored Naxos Town a bit more in the morning before checking out at noon to take a ferry our next stop, Santorini. The ferry was the Blue Star Delos, which is the fleet's newest ship and is an amazing boat. Everything is modern and classy, with numerous lounges and floor to ceiling windows for watching the water and islands slip by. We wanted to take this slow ferry rather than a faster ferry so that we could experience the sheer thrill of approaching Santorini, and the sunken...

Greek Odyssey 2015

Oct 8, 2015 - Naxos

Wednesday, October 7 After another great breakfast at the Hotel Portobello, we checked out and our pre-booked taxi whisked us to the Old Port in a few minutes. We boarded the Superjet high speed ferry that landed us in Naxos a mere 45 minutes later. Naxos is one of the larger islands in the Cyclades chain, verdant and arable and with its own source of water, unlike many other islands. While not dependent upon tourism, it certainly does tourism well. Naxos Town, or Chora as primary island towns are known, has a pleasant harbour and harbour...

Greek Odyssey 2015

Oct 7, 2015 - Mykonos

Sunday, October 4 We awoke early to walk to the ferry terminal at Piraeus for our 7:30 am trip to Mykonos. Our ferry is the Blue Star Paros, one of several slow ferries. These boats, unlike the faster catamarans or sea jets, provide a leisurely voyage where you can spend time on open decks if you wish to watch the sea and assorted islands pass by. These boats are huge, with first class and stateroom sections, several air lounges with assigned seating which are like jet airplanes, and ample economy seating indoors or outdoors, with snack...
