May 9, 2011 - Back to Alex's, Sifnos

Sunday 8th May We didn’t get a lot of sleep last night, not because we were worried about the flooding at home, but because the wedding party was close by, and there is obviously no noise control here! One woman in particular had a very loud laugh, and she seemed to find lots to laugh about. The party finished sometime around 4am. We head to the supermarket to get some fruit for breakfast, but both markets are closed, something to do with it being Sunday. Tony tries to translate a notice on the door of one of them that seems to give the...

May 7, 2011 - Apollonia, Sifnos

Friday 6th May Alex was off to work late this morning, school didn’t start until 9.30. Normally a school day starts at 8.30 and finishes at 2, straight through without a break. They have nearly three months off in summer. We have a list of beaches to go to if we can figure out the bus timetable. You have got to be able to read Greek too, but that is ok because the street signs are also in Greek!. We also have a list of restaurants and cafes to visit, THAT is a bit more difficult because there are no addresses. The day is very cold and...

May 5, 2011 - Couchsurfing with Alex on Sifnos

Today we take the bus to the island capital, Apollonia, about 4km away. We stay around the café garden most of the morning. Air NZ has FINALLY sent us our airpoints numbers (we got to join for free, so decided we may as well). We had to log in our trip so far to earn our points, it took a bit of sorting but we finally got there. Tony just had a bit of trouble claiming the Shanghai-Zurich sector, until he realised that the airport was listed as PuDong, not Shanghai. Alex meets us at the Veranda Café, and we enjoy a coffee and chat, then he...

May 4, 2011 - Kamares, Sifnos

Tuesday 3 May We are up at 7am and downstairs by 7.45. We can smell fresh bread from the bakery next door, and are pleased to see our breakfast includes a warm loaf of bread, yum! We have bread, jam, oj and coffee, that had been reheated from last night. Actually, it isn’t quite heated, more barely luke warm, but we appreciate the gesture. It is wet and it is caffeine, and that is enough for us at that hour. By 8.15 we are at the ferry terminal, and no one else is around. We see one truck waiting at a vehicle entrance, but the driver has...

Sep 24, 2010 - Seriously Sifnos

Hello all, We have had an interesting five days on the island of Sifnos. Where Milos had lots of interesting things on the coast to see, Sifnos' interior was full of cute little villages and had 360 churches. We didn't have time to see all of them(!!), however we went to Chrysopigi where there was a lovely church at the end of the rocks. We have stayed in the village of Kastro (Castle) which is a collection of houses that was part of a walled city on a hill. It was fun exploring the lanes and alleyways of Kastro - some of the houses...

Jun 23, 2010 - Three Days Off the Grid cont...

I had never felt so pleased to see an old gray 1960's Chevy Impala four door sedan as I had been when our death march on the pier ended. Georges waited to drive us to the other side of the island, the quiet beach of Platos Gailas (sp?). We spent a lovely afternoon on the beach, building sand castles, dipping into the Aegean sea and laying on chairs that cost 8 Euro a day to rent. Of course the four door sedan was only supposed to have three in the back seat and one in front, but I put Sabrina on my lap and decided if the cultural thing to...
