May 9, 2007 - Santorini

Sunday 6 May Caught the slow ferry from Naxos to Santorini as they say you need to be able to be out on the decks of the ferry to take photos and to soak up the best views of Santorini as you arrive. We had another great day sightseeing and the sheer cliffs rising out of the water with white and blue houses on top made for many great photo opportunities. A cruise ship had sunk in the harbour near the port the week before but no one had died, luckily, but there was a small oil slick. We were picked up by the hotel shuttle and taken to our...

Apr 9, 2007 - Santorini

Still in Iraklion, we had breakfast at the hotel buffet, then packed up. I got these morning shots of the harbor and the villas across the bay . With Linda's ankles and the hill we decided to take a taxi to the ferry. That seemed to be a waste of time and effort - we went into the terminal. We found the Hellenic Seaways desk, but couldn't understand their directions. We asked somebody else who told us we needed to cross the port and find the Vodephone boat. This turned out to be correct - but we aroused the suspicion of the soldier at...

John & Linda's Trip

Jun 13, 2006 - The Final Destination...Santorini

From Crete, I took another high-speed catamaran ferry ride to Santorini. What started out as a nice relaxing ride quickly turned into a never ending, two hour, roller-coaster ride. While it was a beautiful, sunny day, the weather was a bit windy causing huge waves in the water. We were rocking back and forth for most of the trip. All you could hear were people gasping from the boat rocking and bottles, and glasses banging into each other in the onboard snack bar. My view for the entire ride was water spraying onto the window. I usually...

May 10, 2006 - Santorini

The road up to Fira was laden with donkeys and tour busses. Personally, I'd rather have taken a donkey, but we had way too much luggage. Very very short history of Santorini : the island ıs the edge of a volcano, which last erupted 50 years ago. The caldera ıs, however, fılled wıth water that attaches to the ocean. Thus we have the very beautiful ısland of Santorini. Our three days ın Santorini were filled wıth drinking, eating, incredible views and sunsets, relaxing at beaches, and driving a very shitty convertable car that I convinced my...

Apr 1, 2006 - Mama Loves you babies!

Sorry about the blog blackout for a bit there, but once again, if you want to see where I am and what I'm doing in a (somewhat) different voice, check out http://lonelyplanet.mytripjournal.com/spartucus to read Aaron's viewpoint. Have you ever had a string of days so amazingly good that you start to almost get anxious because you know it couldn't possibly get better (it did...), and that it'll have to end soon (the only constant in life is change)? This has been my existence for the last week. Sometimes life is so good you can't pull...

Mar 31, 2006 - Mamma Loves You Babies

We've spent the last few days with Abby and Susie, our friends from New England that we met in Rome, and Hellen. The first day we just chilled around Fira, walked to the cliffs on the coast and watched the sunset over the volcanic island, pretty sweet. Then, yesterday we did something super cool. Renting a car here is really cheap, 20 euros for 24 hours, so if you pick it up at noon, you bring it back the next day at noon. So we rented a car, drove around for the day, found a secluded beach, set up a tent and some of us slept in the tent...

I AM SPARTUCUS

Sep 21, 2005 - Sanotorini

I wish I had something to write but we've done absolutely nothing but lie on the beach!!! Santorini was beautiful. Different colored beaches everywhere due to the volcano nearby...red beach, black beach, white beach..etc. We got off our overnight ferry and arrived to people everywhere with signs for apartments to rent. Found a man right on the beach in the town we wanted to be in for 10 euros per person and hopped in his van straight away. Spent our first day playing it rough. All three of us fell asleep on the beach, went back later for a...

Sep 11, 2005 - Santorini ( make sure you read the Athens one first.....

Well we got our connecting flight and we were both so tired from the previous night and the flight etc but Santorini made up for it all. The flight took 30 minutes and was hilarious as the flight attendants started to give everyone drinks etc. I leaned over( not very far as the agean airline that one airline of the year must have been bought from a 3rd world midget country somwehere north of pakistan....lol...anyway l said to Anna, check this out as they have given everyone drinks and the time was 28 minutes into it, well when you calculate...

Sep 5, 2005 - Parikia, Paros to Oia, Santorini

Today Ian and I took off on our own and joined the tourist masses on the ferries to visit Santorini. For those of you who have taken a ferry in Canada, these are nothing like those. Think more of the Via Rail seating. THe seats are comfortable and reclining, but much more room than an airplane with a little table that comes out. Our Ferry ride was about 3 hours. When we got to Fira, Santorini we realized why Siteris had been taking us to out of the way ports at every island. It was just chaos (lots of people offering stuff, many confused...

Aug 30, 2005 - Santorini, Greece

Santorini was another beautiful Greek island. We spent the day on a private tour, visiting so many different parts of the island. We started with the small town of Pyrgo, where we had spectacular views of the entire island. As we continued on, we stopped at the most amazing winery ever! The views (as you can see from the pictures) were stunning...and the wine wasn't bad either! Actually the wine was quite good...we bought some bottles and smuggled them back onto the cruise later that night! We were there during their harvest, so we watched...

Aug 4, 2005 - Hello Santorini, Goodbye Greeks

The third and final island in our Island-Hop 2005 is Santorini, its really spectacular and all the Greeks say its the best, most beautiful of all the islands. Its undeniable pretty, but me and Ross get so excited whenever the Malaysia tourism adverts come on the T.V. that we can't stop thinking about how great that will be. The shower-sond of choice is always: "malaysia...the mountains and the sea, my malaysia, calling out...to you and meeeeeee." This is our last real day in Greece to relax and enjoy before embarking on a serious ferry-trek...
