May 8, 2015 - Delos

We went by ferry to the island of Delos this morning to see more ruins. The windy island of Mykonos lived up to it's name and it has been blowing all day making the ferry ride a bit bumpy but no one was sic! The archeological site of Delos is unique as it is located on a small rocky island that is 5 km long and just 1300 metres wide. Among the rocks are a multitude of spring flowers. The actual site has sanctuaries dedicated to Apollo and his sister Artemis withe the ruins of a ancient Hellenistic cit around it - population of about 30,000...

May 7, 2015 - Exploring Mykonos

A beautiful day again. After a delicious breakfast at the hotel we were picked up for our island and city tour. Since the island is only 11 km by 15 km it is easy to do in a morning. We headed out of town first and visited an abandoned lifghthouse that was built in 1896. The views of the town and surrounding islands were nice. The terrain is rocky and very dry. Our guide told us it will be very brown by the end of summer so this is a good time as there is a bit of Greenland colouful spring flowers. From there we went to a small village with...

May 6, 2015 - Shirley Valentine, here we come

Definitely an early start today as we were on the road just after 6:15 and on our way to the ferry. The ferry was very nice and we had large, mostly comfortable, unless you are vertically challenged and unable to have your feet touch the floor. The water was calm and the sailing was long - over 5 hours. There were two island stops first - Syfnos and Tinos and then Mykonos. It was busy. Buses, cruise ships, and people!! But oh the water, the sky, the landscape all combined to produce one beautiful image. There is no way pictures will...

Mamma Mia Tour

Apr 24, 2015 - Mykonos, Greece

Heaven, stunning ........ What more can I say, the place is gorgeous. We docked at 11:00pm the night before and were able to go ashore and experience the nightlife, us responsible adults chose not to because we wanted to spend the day soaking it all in. Off the ship and onto another bus to begin a 2 hour tour of the island. We had Daff and Paul with us so it made for a fun day. Our guide was Thanos and he was an absolute laugh and had us in stitches with his commentary. We visited a few beaches and a monastery but due to it not being summer...

Oct 6, 2014 - Mykonos

It was very dark this morning when we got up to get ready to leave for the ferry to Mykonos. No time for breakfast at the hotel. But that's okay, we had a giant chocolate pastry and a double latte on the boat. Kinda of delicious and fattening, but I've decided that holiday eating doesn't really count, so we just went with it. When we got on the ferry, it wasn't too full, so that was good, and we eventually realized that we had assigned seats because we were asked to move. It was a 5 hour ferry ride, and we eventually ended up sitting...

Sep 9, 2014 - Mykonos and Delos

It was hot. It was fun because I got to experience new things. I loved Delos, apart from the heat, it felt like I was in lava. I learnt a lot about the history of Delos. There were heaps and heaps of cats, like the whole of Mykonos was filled to the top with cats, I really loved it because I love cats.

Sep 9, 2014 - 5th Port on Med. Cruise - Mykonos, Greece

Woke at 10 AM and had room service breakfast. The Ship tendered at 1 pm and Ron scored us tix on the first tender ship. I did a brief gym trip before we went ashore. Tendered ashore and found some rough directions to get to our intended nude beach. As it turns out, the Island is larger than we were lead to believe and we had to walk through town to get a bus to the beach. About a 15 minute walk through winding alleys that were walking paths only and some narrow streets where cars and motor bikes mingled with the walkers. Came out at a...

Living the Dream

Jul 23, 2014 - Mykonos Greece

We were scheduled to be in port in Mykonos from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm. We arrived early, and got off the ship at 12:45. Instead of waiting for the free shuttle to take us into town, we decided to walk. Rick Steves said it was an easy 20 minute walk. What he did not say was the road is very narrow and there is no sidewalk or shoulder on the road. It was scary at times when buses and large trucks were meeting and we had no where to go to get out of the way. We DID take the shuttle at the end of the day when returning to the ship. Mykonos was...

Mediterranean Cruise

Jul 12, 2014 - Day at Sea

Saturday July 12 Today was one full day at sea while we travelled from Greece back up to the north of Italy to Venice. We won't arrive to Venice until tomorrow afternoon and we can't get off to explore more of Venice until around 5 pm. My ankle had to be elevated all evening and the swelling has gone down but the cut doesn't seem to want to heal. This is because every time I take a step my foot bends and wrecks what has begun to heal over. Generally, a day at sea is filled with many exciting entertainment options. To begin, mom and I went...

Jul 11, 2014 - Mykonos, Greece

Friday July 11 Today was our stop at Mykonos, the most beautiful so far. It had that view from the movies of white houses along the hillside overlooking the water. It was very hard to capture a good picture though because the ship was docked a bit far from the view and then we were on a bus to the beach. The beach was beautiful, but unfortunately I couldn't swim due to my injury. I became alarmed at the beach as we noticed my foot was swelling which it didn't do yesterday. Mom spent lots of time in the crystal clear waters and I had a...

Jun 17, 2014 - Mykonos, Greece

17 June 2014 OMG, the sight that greeted us when we drew our curtains this morning in Mykonos was heavenly.....I am running out of superlatives! The sky, water and sunshine shining on the charming white washed homes and blue domed churches built into the hillside and the narrow winding streets with shops and taverns. We cannot wait to get off the shop and explore. The sad thing is that we only have half a day here. We have a short excursion booked to take us for a scenic drive to the highest point in the Island and also a stop for a spot of...

Apr 30, 2014 - Magical Mykonos

We ported early in Mykonos. Off at 8am. It was cloudy and overcast, much to my disappointment!! As it was to Sis that the shops were still mostly closed...except for a frozen yoghurt & ice-creamerie, with free Wifi...bonus!! The verdict on frozen Greek yoghurt with sprinkles & smarties? Totally divine! Doesn't surpass Italian gelato...but verrryy good! What struck us about the island immediately aside from the distinctive white concrete buildings with blue doors was its barren hillside, stray animals and narrow "streets" (think width of...
