Dec 7, 2011 - Katakolon
We walked the seaport and visited cafes and shops. We also got a little wet from a couple small showers. The port was full of lots of people. We also tried the Greek food. I had to get a gyro, however, they also put french fries in it. Lane had chicken and pork on a stick.

Nov 10, 2011 - Day 11 - Katakolon (Olympia), Greece
The pretty fishing village of Katakolon is the port for one of the most important religious centers of ancient Greece. At a time when the Greek people badly needed a focus of unity, Olympia provided a neutral and attractive center where they could meet, compete, worship, and honor one another for a wide range of accomplishments. The date of the first Olympiad was 776 B.C. and this began a tradition that lasted for more than 1,100 years. The games at Olympia were held every four years in honor of Zeus, father of the Greek gods. The religious...

Oct 14, 2010 - Day 14 Katakolon, Greece
This is like a Carribbean port. No tall buildings, small town feeling. Went on a farm tour. The bus drove for about 1/2 hour into the countryside. A really neat farm where they grow olives, grapes and citrus. Also other things such as walnuts, quince, and pomogranates.First we had ouzo or wine and a bun and we walked around looking at all the plants growing and the farmer told us about the manufacture of olive oil. Then they gave us a meal with brucheta, bean salad, cream cheese on bread, olives and all the wine we could drink. They...

Aug 23, 2010 - Katakolon, Greece
Our second Greek port was Katakolon. There isn’t much in the town itself but it is the gateway to ancient Olympia. The site of the original Olympics is huge. Unfortunately it was also very hot and crowded. Our guide was very knowledgeable but got frustrated by the way people kept wandering off. After we were all rounded up we drove to a local hotel. There we were treated to snacks, folk dancing and most importantly, Ouzo!

Aug 16, 2010 - Back in Greece but for the last time
August 16 - Monday. - This is the ship's first stop and our last time in Greece. Sad. We are sitting in a portside cafe looking back toward the ship . This cafe has free internet! On the ship it is 19 Euros an hour for internet and it takes a while to write and download pictures and everything. Had a wonderful dinner last night. They have given us a table all by ourselves and we are really glad. Also, and this is really exciting for Rick, they have a gluten free menu on the ship. They bring him fresh baked rolls, gluten free pastas, and...

Sep 18, 2009 - Katakolon
Katakolon is a beautiful little seaside village overlooking the Ionian Sea. It is the gateway to Olympia, where the ancient Greeks used to flock every four years for more than a thousand years to celebrate the sacred games dedicated to Zeus. Another example of many shops in the marketlike theme, lovely to walk along the stone streets and browse. We wandered down to the 'beach' which was a little inlet with the shore about 20mx10m covered in rocks with beach umbrellas and deck chairs which you could hire to lay on. The water looked very...

Hey It's Nicole again! Today we were in Katakolon, Greece. We decided to take it easy today and just stay in town and shop and relax. The city itself was very cute. Gini and I wonder around shopping for about an hour before we decided to stop for lunch. We found a place right on the water. We could see the fish swimming around in the crystal clear water. It was beautiful! Then we went back to the ship to spend the rest of the day relaxing by the pool. All in all today was a great day! Hello All, Wow, its hard to believe that we have been on...

Hi all Woke up coming into Katakolon where the first olympics were held and many more until they started moving around the world. Lovely little town with only 3 streets by the sea. Pete and I met some great people on the ship and spent the day with 2 other couples from Canada. We just wandered about this lovely little greek town and did a bit of shopping and coffee etc. That night we left again and had 30 hours at sea...

Oct 13, 2007 - Katakolon
Weather warm & pleasant. During the night we came through the Aegean Sea rounding the Peloponnese Peninsular arriving in Katakolon at 8am. Took the tour 'The Olympic Spirit'. Bus tour to Olympia to the ruins & then the Archaelogical Museum (impressive). Browsed through Olympia then back to Katakolon for lunch on the boat and then into the shops. Met Chris (school teacher from Akld), for a drink at the bar, the top/back of the ship as we sailed away. Dinner with my American friends and then off to the show.

Jul 24, 2007 - Katakolon, Greece
The port of Katakolon is on the Aegean Sea on the PILopannese pennisula . It is 30 minutes from Olympia where the ancient Greeks came to celebrate the games. Only about 700 people liver in Olympia and there are more hotel rooms than homes. The original Olympics began as a small regional festival which was dedicated to the god Zeus. Slaves and women were not allowed to be spectators and women caught sneaking in were thrown off a cliff. The first olympic games were held in 776 BC. The games were banned in 426 but began again in 1896 in...
