Galaxidi. Begin with the place. Four hours or so from Athens, west central Greece. A linear description that does no justice to the destination. Depi and I drive through searing heat from the desolate corner of Athinas and Evripidou in downtown Athens, filling her car with petrol for a shocking 40 Euros. The traffic thins. Circa 350 B.C.E. After being dragged by her hair by an irate Alexander, who was not yet 'Great', the Oracle of Delphi screamed "Alright, alright, you are unbeatable!". We got no such welcome but Delphi, the center of Ancient Greece, is small but remarkably well-preserved. An interesting stop before boarding the ferry from Patra to Venice.

Day 6 - Delphi and onto Athens

Today we checked out of our hotel and left Patras. On the way back to Athens we stopped at Delphi and visited the museum and ruins.
The day started out cold and rainy, but as we drove up through the mountains it began to clear. After we left the museum, it became a beautiful sunny day. The trail through the ruins was steep at times, but the scenery was beautiful.
I don't have as many pictures of the kids today as they were all spread out over the trail, but I know they took a load of pictures...

Nov 12, 2008 - Arachova and Delphi

We continued our trip to the mountain town of Arachova...so incredibley beautiful. The town is on a side of a huge mountain range, it's absolutely breathtaking. I bought two rugs and then Donna and I had appetizers and the local wine. I had sagonaki (fried cheese) yumm!!! We are now at Delphi, tomorrow we will tour the Temple of Apollo where the famous Oracle made many predictions. Today I drank from the Castilla Spring which is supposed to make you get married in the next year; I vowed it was marriage to mother earth and drank it anyway...

Ancient Delphi, sitting on the slopes of Mt. Parnassos and overlooking the sea, is a magical place. In classical times, people traveled from all over the Mediterranean to visit the Delphic oracle at the Temple of Apollo. To the Greeks, Delphi represented the center of the earth and the universe. Inside the temple, the oracle, who was always a woman, sat at the mouth of a fume-emitting chasm and answered questions about the future. According to our guide, geologists have determined that a methane vent existed at the site during ancient times.

May 25, 2008 - Day trip to Dephi

Greetings! Today we took a trip to the ancient site of Delphi (pronounced DEL-fee). It is located near the north shore of the Gulf of Corinth about a 3 hour drive NE of Athens. Our lovely and extremely knowledgeable tour guide, Eva, talked almost the whole time about the geographic countryside, past wars, some politics and a lot of Greek mythology.
