Sep 22, 2004 - Athens again

Extract from my e-mail journal: Well we came back to Aphrodite and the company separated, I stayed on a couple of days as I had still not seen the Parthenon! It was such a pleasure to go up there with Karen and Lauren, I am such a lucky guy! Lauren left that afternoon and Karen the following day. Before she left Karen and I managed to see some events at the Paralympics. The Olympic site is incredible the stadium is vast and when we were there it was filled with School children all shouting "Hellas, Hellas", whether there was a Greek...

Sep 17, 2004 - We're Here!!! Yeeehaa!!

Hello Everyone, The Gypsies made it to their first destination! After a long plane ride of hell (we were part of the Seinfeld Episode-you know-where he sits beside the person that just won't shut-up!!!) Well, that was us 8 1/2 Hours of blah, blah, blah , blah, Spain, Sausage, blah, blah, blah. She was nice enough, but whow,shut-up!! Anyways, when we arrived we had our first episode of disaster. Kerry's zipper broke and it really drew attention to us struggling away with our bag in the corner of the airport, so Kerry just ripped it off and...

Extract from my e-mail Journal: I settled into hostel Aphrodite, making conversation with some of my fellow travellers when who should I see but Wootastik himself, Jason the bus boy. Together with Lauren we go to Santorini for...

Sep 7, 2004 - I Hope This is the Right Bus

It seemed like a good idea for months. Get off the plane in Athens with no itinerary and no plan. You'll figure it out when you get there I kept telling myself. That was until I stepped into Athens airport and realized that I didn't speak a lick of Greek. It probably didn't help that, during my layover in Zurich, a friendly elderly lady visiting family in Greece thought I was crazy to go to Athens alone. "Be careful okay, and hold onto your stuff. Don't trust anyone now," she kept saying in a thick European accent, her eyes squinting as she...

Aug 27, 2004 - Athens, Greece

There is a great thing about the trains/subways in Berlin, there is a clock showing when the next one is arriving. Except for the one that we needed in the morning to the airport at 5 in the morning and which left as we arrived to the platform. Next one 30 min later; nevertheless we made it to the plane in time. Athens had none of the clouds and the cool weather of the last days. First we went to the port of Athens, Piraeus to put our backpack in left luggage office. From here we went into the city and ran around for awhile to see the...

Jul 18, 2004 - Leaving Santorini... Long trip ahead of us

We are leaving Santorini tonight on an 8 o'clock ferry to Athens. From Athens we jump on a train to Patras to catch another ferry at 6pm to Bari, back in Italy. Then onto a train to Venice. So needless to say we are going to be miserable for a couple of days. I uploaded a lot of picutres into the Rome section, what a pain. It takes about 2 minutes or longer to upload each picture. Well we gotta get ready to take the bus to the ferry docks. Talk to you all in a couple of days... Jon & Shelly

Lost in Europe

Jul 14, 2004 - Athens. LOTS OF PICS UPDATED FOR PARIS AND FLORENCE

We finally made it to Athens after a nice ferry ride. This ferry was definately more like a cruise ship it had casino, several bars, discos, and all kinds of restaurants. We settled into our 'rooms' and then watched the beautiful sunset just as we launched off the Italian coast. We shared a bottle of wine and just relaxed. Then we had an overpriced dinner, of course, and met some people and stayed up and played cards. I went to bed around midnight and Jon stayed up and talked with a German couple. They had only deck tickets and there were a...

Lost in Europe

Jul 11, 2004 - Diplomacy ın Actıon

Athens, Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, hazy, 80 degrees Neat surprise - we found ourselves in business class for the flight up from Larnaca and also apparently from here on to Istanbul. So, I'm sitting here in the British Airways lounge at Athens Airport, which looks like every other British Airways lounge everywhere else, typing on my laptop and sipping my frappe. Gee, how far we've come. Sad leaving Cyprus, sadder because it involved getting up at 4 am to catch our flight out of the itty bitty Larnaca Airport. Departures...

May 30, 2004 - Cairo/Athens

Up this morning by 7:30 so Joe could borrow our shower (he and Marie had no hot water). Had breakfast with about half the group and then said goodbye to Marie and Joe. Headed back to my room about 9:00 but, as my roommate had the key and wasn't there, stopped by Yassi's room instead. She had slept through breakfast with the group so we went back to the restaurant so she could eat. We hung out and chatted for a couple of hours. By then I was hungry again so I joined the group again for lunch at 12:00. Finally was able to get to my room to...

May 21, 2004 - Kalambaka/Athens

Up early and on to the monasteries in the area. We went to two; the smallest and the biggest. These aren't exactly my cup of tea and they're not nearly as old (only 400-600 years old) as the ruins we've been seeing but they are interesting in their own way. They all seem to have been constructed in the most inconvenient and most difficult to reach places. We stopped first and took pictures of the monastery that was used in the James Bond movie 'For Your Eyes Only' and then actually went into two more with our local guide. The willingness of...

May 19, 2004 - D: Athens, Greece

Hello Friends, We have now officially arrived in the First World. I have heard that Greece is dirty, inconvenient, slow, and kind of backwards for Europe. Well, it turns out if you spend 2 months in Africa before you go to Greece it seems incredibly clean---we are appreciating the trash cans on every corner, efficient, sophisticated, hassle-free, and totally put together. Everything is relative, I suppose. I wasn't expecting to like Athens so much. We found a cheap hotel right in the center of everything which means we can walk everywhere....

May 14, 2004 - Paris/Athens

Up right around 8:00, showered, packed, and checked out by the 9:00 am (ridiculous!) check out time. To the main train station where I grabbed a train to Charles de Gaulle airport. (I like France but they really need to work on their signs.) Took me 20 minutes just to figure out where I was, let alone get to where I needed to be. Turns out I was in a pretty good spot. Found the American Airlines office and changed my flight on 7/6 to 6/17 instead. Am looking forward to getting home a bit earlier than originally planned. Found the correct...
