Mar 16, 2012 - Athens, Greece
Wiki Info Athens Bus ride Albania to Athens, Greece went thru some very beautiful countryside...grapes, olive groves, orange groves, lots of sheep, not so many goats, a few cows, high, snowcapped mountain peaks, and colorful seashores with clear teal colored water. Off bus & short walk to Metro where we took advantage of our age and paid the senior rate of .70 euro to get to Sintagma Sq. Another short walk to The Student & Travellers IYH Hostel (formerly "Inn"). A 4 bed dorm with ensuite bathroom just $16 euro each! Went to nearby cafe and...Jump to full entry
Feb 18, 2012 - My Perfect Birthday
This was quite possibly the best birthday of my life thus far. I was in Athens, Greece enjoying every minute of everyday. I felt like being here was an amazing celebration alone and I was content to spend the day just as I every other day in Athens. Alex, however, had other plans. (Party time). First stop: a roof top bar. We got there at 11:45pm just in time to ring in my new year at midnight, with a cocktail and a breathtaking view. Not a bad start. After that we had a quick bite to eat, and headed home to rest up for next day. 2. In the...Jump to full entry
Feb 17, 2012 - The acropolis & plaka square
Finally!!! I can say it...I have been to the Acropolis. Ancient Greek's city center. In Greece, Acropolis translates to "high city", and let me tell you, it is high. Today was a workout! No one warns you before hand but it is a hike to get to the top! It's like climbing up the side of a rocky mountain: no hand rails to help you make it, and no emergency crew in site to help you if you don't. Once you make to the top however, what you see is breathtaking! The Acropolis overlooks all of Athens....truly one of the most beautiful views I have...Jump to full entry
Feb 15, 2012 - Ahhh GAME DAY: my favorite day of the week.
I have said the above line to Alex before every one of his games, probably since his sophomore year in high school (thats a lot of games). Game day really is my favorite day of the week. I am (one of ) Alex's #1 fan. On game days, I suit up in his jersey, just like he does, and I have probably come closer than I know, to a fight or two due to the things that come out of my mouth during games. Needless to say, I was very excited to see my bro playing as professional. Unfortunately, Alex tweaked his knee before I came to Greece and is taking...Jump to full entry
Feb 14, 2012 - Efaristos Eros (Thank you Cupid)
Finally. I am starting to fall in love with Greece. I woke up a little bummed out today. I haven't been able to see all of the ancient sites I have been dying to go to, due to the political unrest in downtown Athens ( I am hoping this changes by Friday) . After yet another late start to my day, I decided to take my daily walk around Nea Smyrni. I bought some strawberries at the a nearby health food store, recommended by my mom, and did some window shopping at a shoe store where I intend to buy myself a birthday present (new boots!). It was...Jump to full entry
Feb 13, 2012 - Graffiti & cafe racers
I really don't have too much to say today. I woke up late again, but, I am starting to realize that Greece wakes up late too...I guess I'm fitting in here. Because of all the turmoil downtown, I am kind of stuck to one part of Athens right now. So, I did what I have been doing: a lot of walking and people watching. As a matter of fact, I walked Alex to practice today. I have to say the Panionios arena is in a very beautiful neighborhood (5 minutes walking distance from Alex's place). However, the outside of the building would make one...Jump to full entry
Feb 12, 2012 - Lazy Sunday: pizzateca, cafes and RIOTS
I had a wonderful Sunday. After a very late night (early morning) out, I honestly did not wake up until around 1pm (very unlike me). It was raining pretty hard so I figured I would not get to do much site seeing. Around 4 o'clock the rain had stopped so Alex and I decided to go out for pizza. We went to this GREAT place called Pizzateca. We sat outside, people watched and enjoyed a great meal. Afterwards, we walked to a very cozy looking cafe I had been wanting to try. I had a delicious mochacinno, The ambiance at this place is lovely, and...Jump to full entry
Feb 12, 2012 - Nightlife: Greek Bar Hopping
Tonight I got taste of what Greek nightlife is all about. We took a taxi to the downtown area, which is about 15-20 minutes away. First stop, La Lou. The only place I saw that night with a dance floor. Apparently, Greeks are not big on dancing in clubs and I found myself alone on the dance floor several times that evening. I didn't mind. If you have ever been out me then you know I can dance by myself all night with no problem. La Lou has a light dance floor to boot! I loved it! Our next stop was club Rock & Roll. This place was like an...Jump to full entry
Feb 11, 2012 - Milate Anglika?
Today I decided to get out and explore Alex's neighborhood, Nea Smyrini, neither one of us is totally sure how this is pronounced. He and Macie walked me to the nearby Starbucks and from there I was on my own. I was little nervous about getting lost since all the street signs are Greek to me (ha ha ha). If I had gotten lost, I wouldn't have had the first clue on what to say to anyone to explain where I was trying to go. So I used landmarks the Panionios Graffiti, and Athena's (the local strip club), to help me out. Athen's traffic is...Jump to full entry
Feb 10, 2012 - Day One: Gia Sas (Hello) From Greece
After 17 hours of flying I am finally here :) ! The first thing noticed is that the Greeks seem to love their cigarettes. As soon I as stepped off the plane there were 3 different vendors selling big cartons of them, duty free ! They also have a number pretty fancy smoking rooms ( they look like big glass boxes) through out the airport, which is pretty modern. Day one was great! Alex picked me up on time, and to my surprise, he actually knows his way around the city pretty well. Our first stop was his condo, where I met his new best friend,...Jump to full entry
Jan 28, 2012 - I arrived safe in Athens!
It was a rough flight from the United States to Athens Greece, but the feeling I felt when I smelled the air, tasted it on my lips... I can't explain how full my heart is, how amazing my family is I was greeted by 36 family members who welcomed me with open arms, they laugh and tell me how greek I look haha and joke how american I am, My cousins...I can't wait to get to know them, I can tell they are hard working by there hands, rough worn hands, makes me reflect on my own, how different our worlds are, will they meet in the middle...Jump to full entry
Nov 10, 2011 - give it back!
Ships visiting Athens dock in Piraeus, a singularly unattractive town about half an hour drive from the center city. Considering there were 10,000 cruisers there today and this number of visitors is typical, it is surprisingly that the town has few stores or services directed toward us. Many ferry boats also arrive there throughout the day and bring residents from the nearby islands who come and shop for the household goods of daily life. That’s mostly what we saw here today before we took a tour into town to see the Acropolis Museum. The...Jump to full entry
