Aug 18, 2015 - The family tree has suddenly sprouted

2nd last day on Kythera 𯘓 Firstly we went to Hora to meet local historian and ex high school teacher Eleni Harou. She had researched J's grandfathers family and had the family tree back to the year dot. She had also written a brief family outline. She told us where the original family lived, and the name of the family church. This was of course immense help to J and he now has pretty much what he has been trying to find. Of course photos would be good to have if they exist and can be found. We were given cold water and Rosedes ( almond and...

Aug 17, 2015 - Following Tom

Today was to be a following up relatives day. We awoke to find the Club Med 2 moored in Kapsali Bay. This is a small cruise liner with 5 masts - yes it is a sailboat. French I believe, and probably fairly exclusive and expensive. Buses appeared, and passengers were ferried ashore for the day. Let's hope we don't come round a corner and have a bus heading for us! J went down to the mini mart about 8 to get some fruit, yoghurt, and milk. The place was nearly deserted. No one on the beach. Shopkeepers and cafe owners sweeping leaves form their...

Aug 16, 2015 - Coffee at Sirokali

Had a swim at 6:45 - a bit cooler today as there was a reasonable breeze blowing. On our way back, who should be sitting at a cafe smoking but cousin Andreas. He suggested coffee, and we said we would come back when showered and changed. Which we did. We had tea at our favourite cafe at Kapsali - Fava, Potatoes, salad, and an interesting chees dish with peppers and maybe chilli. A had eaten, but he had a drink, and we persuaded him to share some food, which he did. We then retired for Greek coffee and Cappucino. We heard many tales about...

Aug 16, 2015 - Door slammed in our faces

We arose at 8 and decided we had better get cracking so we wouldn't cause the housemaid any delays. Last night we met up with cousin Andreas at Kapsali - he recommended a place about 250 m up the road, and suggested he could take me there on his bike, then return for C. The look on her face said it all. J rushed and got the car keys and we trundled up to Molos Restaurant. It has lovely views down over Kapsali and the menu looked great. After a bit of haggling , we caved in to A. It was his pleasure and duty to take us for a meal as we had...

Aug 15, 2015 - I'm just ventilating my arms!

A quiet day today. J decided that he would seek a medical opinion about his feet, as the situation had been going on too long. The toe problem seems resolved (albeit at the expense of Mythos beer , tomatoes and red meat!), but swollen feet are a pain in the neck! So we headed off to Potamos. Not before we were hurried out of our room by the housekeeper. She knocked on the door and C indicated J was resting and could she come back in 30 minutes. "No, I have to do it now" she said. Sounds rude, but they are not. Just very direct. Waiters say...

Aug 14, 2015 - Obviously no rooms to let

We swam at 6 for an hour and then relaxed until the hunger pangs came. We opted for crepes and fries, plus a smoothie and a soda. Then we staggered home to update the blog and have a read. And that couple were back on the beach tonight! Accommodation must be hard to come by!!

Aug 14, 2015 - Get out of the #£+$&@ way!

Today we called on the Bishop of Kythera! Well actually we went to the office to make enquiries about J's Propappouss (great grandfather) , George the priest. They have collected relevant details and passed them on to the local historian. We are to ring on Monday to see what she has found. It was very overcast and very humid, and with no aircon in the office we were streaming. We decided to do a trip up north to Potamos for lunch and a look around. It was very busy, all the tavernas and cafes busy, cars everywhere ( utter chaos) and shops...

Aug 13, 2015 - πάει και να πάρει ένα δωμάτιο

When we woke there were dark clouds on the horizon and it was very humid. We decided to visit the Kastro, to seek info on one of J's ancestors. We parked in the car park and started down to the centre of Hora. Rather than go down the steps to the top of the Platia, we thought we would go a bit further along the lane way and then go down into the town. An old Greek codger had different ideas. Telling us we couldn't go that way and need to go down the steps. He gabbled and gesticulated, and said "look, down there", and when C didn't look...

Aug 12, 2015 - Mad dogs and Englishmen.....

Off to Hora today - appointment with Kyria Pavlakis at the Municipal building to try to obtain family records. It seemed she hadn't pre prepared anything and J thought he would be in for a long wait. Not so! A short wait and she pointed out in Greek that old records are at the Kastro. She then certified about 10 documents and handed them over with a smile. "Evharisto" said J. Not sure what the docs are or if they are in fact relatives - that can wait until later. We met Vikki and Tom at the Fos Fanari cafe for coffee. Then were introduced...

Aug 11, 2015 - Look! he's covering his melons!

Up earlier today as we have a visit planned. As we were getting ready, the iPad came to life and Katy,Andy, Henry and Georgy were on FaceTime . Henry's first comment was "grandad's a nudie rudie! - J was not wearing a shirt! We had a good chat. After a quick trip to the bank to get some money, we collected cousin Andreas who was waiting patiently outside the mini market in Hora. He had been to church earlier ( he was up at 5:30) and had some Greek cake for us that had been blessed by the Priest. We headed north to Kondolianika where we...

Aug 10, 2015 - Paap, paap, paap

We awoke with no alarm at 8. Another nice day; big fluffy thunder clouds out to sea, but no rain here! Decided to spend some time in Mylopotamos today. We left about 10:30 and it only took 30 mins - the road in was narrow and we had to wait for oncoming traffic on a number of occasions. Through the town, and out a bit, we came upon a huge plot of nearly level land with a magnificent modern stone wall around it. It is either awaiting a new church, or someone's mansion! We found a proper car park and walked into town. It was busy and hot! We...

Aug 9, 2015 - Growing Family

A quiet day after our late night at the wine festival. Up to Hora for a couple of photo opportunities from the water tank hill, and from the road to Felotis. Lots of volcanic rock all over the ground - very sharp and could do serious damage if you fell on it! J saw no vipers, but he was careful! We called at the supermarket to follow up a possible cousin of J - she will be there this evening. Talked with her Husband . Then we wandered about in Hora - very old and traditional town, narrow streets, alleyways and steps, with the odd arch...
