May 17, 2017 - Hydra and Spetses

Whatta day! An island-hopping adventure to Hydra and Spetses. Kudos to Bridget who somehow got us to the cruise boat in Tolo, a town about 20 minutes south of Nafplio, in two Mercedes taxis, and got us back to Nafplio at the end of the day in a "van" that had morphed into a luxury bus built to carry about 60 people! Boy, did we laugh when we saw it! Our first stop was Hydra for 3 hours. It's a lovely city with very limited automobiles allowed. Rick was disappointed to see any vehicles, but apparently since he was there 35 years ago, they...

A Group in Greece

Jun 14, 2016 - Hydra

Hydra, Idra, Ydra…… Pronounced “eedra” by Greeks So long Athens! We’ll be back….to catch a plane that is, probably not for any other purpose. ‘Twas a a good visit, perfect location next to the Plaka, the “happening” zone but otherwise not a very nice place. We checked out of Athens Gate and proceeded via taxi to Piraeus the port city next to Athens. The number of ferries traversing this harbour is amazing! It is a non stop succession of ferries of every description coming and going but unfortunately there is no actual terminal facility for...

Oct 3, 2015 - Hydra

Thursday, October 1 Today we are headed to the Island of Hydra, in the Saronic Islands just off the mainland. Despina's husband walked from his office to help us with our luggage and drove dropped us off with our rental at the bus station. As we waited, we noticed quite a few people making the long climb up the Palamidi Fortress, as this was the nicest day in Nafplio to date. We found out, fortunately not too late, that we had to catch our bus around the corner instead of in front of the bus station - our first bit of stress for the long...

Greek Odyssey 2015

Sep 11, 2015 - Verne Kitty

Josie luggage has arrived at the hotel! We left to meet our transfer ride to the boat to take us to Hydra, Poros and Aegina. While we are waiting we met another couple from Sydney area who are staying at the hotel that is in the building right next to us. Pat and Ilene are on their second day in Athens and will be leaving tomorrow with a tour group. We left on the boat at 8:30 and would be arriving at Hydra at 11:30. We didn’t bring any reading material as we didn’t know we would be on the boat that long. It was an “Are we there yet?” trip....

May 2, 2015 - Athens and a Ferry to Hydra

HYDRA YDRA 1.5 hours from Athen's port of Piraeus. A small island we saw from a ferry 30+ years ago and finally came to visit. This is our first port of call of 3 Greek Islands we plan to visit. Three nights here have been a joy. There are no vehicles here except a rubbish truck and an ambulance. All porterage of bags is by donkey. We intended to walk to the Hotel Angelica but soon realised that was a hopeless idea-our small wheeled suitcases couldn't cope with the big cobblestones and the uphills started almost immediately from the water's...

Oct 7, 2011 - Hydra

I have come down with a nasty head cold just as the the tour is winding down, so haven't done a lot the last 2 days. We are on the island of Hydra, a nice car-free island just 2 hours from Athens by boat. They use donkeys here to carry everything from groceries to the kitchen sink (I actually did see a donkey with a sink strapped to it's back). It could also be called the island of cats, as I have never seen so many cats in one place. There's a regular cat population explosion here. Since I've been feeling under the weather, I didn't do...

Greece & Turkey 2011

Sep 20, 2011 - Aegina to Hydra

I woke up about 2.30am and spent a lot of hours talking to myself, sending emails and reading before anyone else arose. We headed out of port about 9.00am, heading for Hydra. No swims on the way today however Dave said there would be some good swimming spots (no beaches so you jump in from the rocks) when we arrived in Hydra. We sailed for about 3 hours before arriving and tying up. Tying up is an experience in itself. Pete is anchorman, David does the lines at the stern (we come into the dock stern first), Pete drops the anchor and then we...

Nov 11, 2009 - Island hopping outside Athens

Today was the last day in Greece. Maria, Paul and I took a 1-day three island boat tour. The first island, Hydra, only had donkey's for transportation. This was the most beautiful of all the islands. The 2nd island I cannot really remember and the 3rd island was very large with ruins and a very famous Greek Orthodox Church, where people come to be healed. This last island is called, Aegeana (sp?), and is famous for pistachios. We watched Greek dancers on the ship on the way back to port. Pretty fun last day. I would certainly visit Greece...

Feb 15, 2009 - Day 3 - Hydra - Poros - Aegina Islands

Day 3 - The Greek Isles Let me first say that I have more pictures than I can post here so I will do a second posting of just more pictures. But rest assured your kids are taking LOTS of pictures and should be able to put on quite a show when they get home. We had a long and wonderful day today. Most of us did not sleep through the night as we are still getting used to the time change. We got a wake-up call at 5 am and had breakfast at 6 am. The kids are getting used to European food. For instance, we had orange juice that did not taste...

Nov 11, 2008 - Island of donkeys, and cats

So alot has happened. Sunday all the ancient sites were free, so I hauled my cookies to almost all of them, including the acropolis. It's amazing how these things were built; huge, detailed, and lasting for 1000's of years. Dwayne Brown (tcr vp construction) has nothing on these guys! (the caps on this keyboard is not working well, so for the duration i think i will not use it) after the acropolis i ate my first gyro (made of pork here); the pita was awesome. the beer, alpha, was ok, but no boulevard! when i was at the temple of zeus i...
