Nov 23, 2010 - Exploring Nafplion & Epidavros

Today we go exploring the city of Nafplion and the surrounding areas. Starting from our hotel at 8am its a pleasant stroll along the port road, past numerous bars/cafes. We headed out to the lighthouse to get a better view of Bourtzi Island and its fort. Along the way there are numerous people out fishing (the bay is reputed to be one of the most fertile bodies of water in Greece). The air is cold and crisp, and the water dead calm. Today was a travel day. We leave Athens and head for Nafplion. A short walk from our hotel in Athens down to the Avis car rental agency. Pick up the caR and head off down the road. OK, everything you may ever have heard about driving in Greece is absolutely, 100%, no doubt about it, correct!!! Mar 31, 2010 - The sights of Nafplion

If only we had pedometers! We thoroughly enjoyed walking around this ancient, glorious and romantic town. We saw the waterfront area with it's outdoor seating restaurants and very large boats then walked uphill to the small streets inland where there are quaint little shops, restaurants, places of lodging and residence. The streets look like stone walkways. We couldn't quite get used to the fact that we needed to move for motorized vehicles. We spent the morning strolling the town. Randy Our travels books unanimously gave the small town of Nafplion highest marks for a visit. Nafplion is on the northeast coast of the Peloponnese, a three-hour bus ride from Olympia. Nafplion is a beautiful town with three grand fortresses, it was the capital of Greece in the olden days, and it is near to a collection of ancient Greek ruins such as Mycenae, Tiryns, Epidaurus, and Corinth.
