Oct 29, 2017 - Alsheim unt Oppenheim (with a Dash of Worms)

Welcome - The final leg, almost. From Worms I took a day trip to the small towns of Alsheim and Oppenheim. I'm finding the smaller places more interesting the longer I'm at this. The places you've heard of are much more predictable. Switch a few things around and Cologne becomes New York or Bordeaux. Why these two? My 8th Great-Grandfather Hans Konrad Kummell was born in Oppenheim and died in Alsheim along with my 8th Great Grand-Mother Anna Marie Knebel. Their son, Johann Michael was orphaned early. Marie died when he was 3, Hans a year...

Apr 23, 2014 - Update from Worms, Germany

Hello everyone from Worms (of course you really need to add a bit of a 'v' sound to that). I am enjoying being in my attic single room in the centrally located YHI with a great view out of my dormer window including a church spier. In fact it has very loud bells which just went off at 6.15 for an extended period but does not seem to be doing anything for 6.30 or 7pm. Worms is like many of these medium sized towns - interesting (especially the Jewish history here), invariably a stunning cathedral, good food, cafe culture in the main street,...

May 7, 2011 - Worms

Saturday, May 7, 2011. We are in Worms, Germany and our new caching friend, Gerd, has planned our day of caching. We had our most awesome breakfast-bar yet (every morning we say this) at the Arsgaard Hotel and meet- up with Gerd for a day of awesome caching. Gerd planned our caches to begin with a puzzle caching tour series of the ancient sights in the city of Worms. Our walk took us through city gardens, into synagogues, by shops (where Lois stopped for a Pandora charm and I stopped at the scarf store). The city cache was a puzzle cache...

May 6, 2011 - On our way to Worms

Friday, May 6, 2011 We drove through the Ardienne Forest which is mostly tree farms now. It is hard to imagine the war going on in this pastoral setting. Some of the fiercest fighting of WWII happened here in the worst of winter. We got off the freeway and onto country roads where the scenery was stunning. Springtime in Europe is awesome with everything blooming and the new-green of spring leaves on the many, many kinds of trees. This was a long day of driving and stopping only for caches and convenience stores. Going from country to...

May 5, 2011 - Brussels to Worms

Thursday, May 5, 2011 Belgium…….We are in the land of Chocolate!!! What a great place to be. We stayed overnight just south of Brussels. Got off the fast highways and drove through the country side which was absolutely gorgeous. Centuries old castles and monasteries reside along quaint old stone buildings that have been restored and all have beautiful, white Belgian lace at the windows. We picked up Europe’s oldest cache and had lunch in a Castle built in the 1400’s. Very yummy, and very French cuisine although we were still in Belgium....

Nov 20, 2007 - Germany - The River Rhein - Düsseldorf to Worms

Hello to all our friends and family - we miss you and will see many of you soon. This past week we arrived in Düsseldorf by train from Freiburg, picked up a car and proceeded on our adventure along the Rhein River. Several interesting comments about our tour before specific towns and places visited. First the Rhein River flows north out of Switzerland through Germany and into Holland to the sea. The Rhein is a beautiful body of water and it is easy to become mesmerized by its awesome power. Even now as I picture walks we took, drives along...

Aug 13, 2007 - Learnig who I am

Today is a little cooler. We had a bi-i-i-g storm last night. I was born in PA. in 1943. Me and my mother lived with my grandparants till my dad returned from world war II. We still lived with my grandparents till I was 7 years old. That was when my mother left us for some other guy. We still lived with my grandparents till I was about 8, when my dad remarried. When I was 3 my first mother had my brother. When she left she took him with her. However, my dad went and brought my brother back right away. After my dad remarried we lived in a...
