Aug 11, 2017 - Mainz to St. Goar

Friday, August 11 Mainz to St. Goar 4 hrs 50 mins 83.6 kms It did not rain through the night. The morning sky was overcast and low; rain was there for the touching. I got up at around seven and broke camp. I went over to say goodbye to the young couple, Tom and Brit, from Utrecht. They had been visiting friends yesterday. One of their goals was out of the way; now getting to Basel didn't seem so important. I stopped and had a coffee at the reception before hitting the road. Then I was out the gate and heading downstream. I did good getting...

Jun 24, 2016 - Day 21 cycle tour. Koblenz to St Goar

Overview A quick trip to the supermarket for our lunch supplies before collecting our bikes from the hotel garages. (Pumped the tyres and wiped the chain .. Hotel had bike equipment !) Rode along the last km or so of the Moselle to where it joined the Rhine. Lots of marquees there as they set up for running race this weekend. The Rhine was huge compared to the Moselle. Started riding up river. Cycle path was wide and excellent surface. Went through the forests, along the banks of the river and past lovely old buildings as we were leaving...

Jul 5, 2015 - Saint Goar, Germany

St. Goar is a lovely town is just a short train ride away from Spay, Germany. Sam and I decided to venture out on our own for some dinner and window shopping. This was our first try at navigating the train schedules and ticket purchases. We were so excited to hear the announcement of St. Goar and to step out of the train station into town. It is a town of cobblestone streets filled with houses and shops with beautiful window boxes dressed with flowers. The main street is a pedestrian area lined with small cafes and views of castles along...

Jun 22, 2015 - Rheinfels Castle Visit

Who could resist a chance to explore a medieval castle? Here is a little bit about the castle that we had a chance to tour. Rheinfels Castle is a castle ruin located above the west bank of the Rhine in St. Goar, Germany. It was started in 1245 by Count Diether V of Katzenelnbogen. After expansions, it was the largest fortress in the Middle Rhine Valley between Koblenz and Mainz. It was slighted by French Revolutionary Army troops in 1797. It is the largest castle overlooking the Rhine, and historically covered five times its current area....

May 21, 2015 - Rheinfels Castle Tour

Christi invited us to ride with her to tour the Rheinfels Castle today. The castle is located in the beautiful town of Saint Goar. She drove us right to the parking lot at the top and left for her appointment. We paid our five euros and walked all over the castle and enjoyed the museum as well. I took over 400 pictures and will have to do two updates on this one. :-) I am pasting a bit of information for our readers below. In 1245 the castle was built by Count Diether V von Katzenelnbogen to protect the St. Goar tax collectors and soon...

Dec 18, 2011 - Amsterdam to Rhine Valley

Up very early today. Going to Germany. Saw our first little bit of snow: piled up next to road on the way to Germany. But only a little bit. Surpise stop in Cologne: there was a xmas market and lots of yummy stuff to eat. Then we went on to the Rhine valley. Arrived about 5pm. Stayed in a nice little hotel in a small village. Went for whine tasting that night. We tasted the very special EishWine that is made from grapes frozen for 7 days (on the vine).

Sep 5, 2009 - Lauterbraunnen

We left Lauterbraunnen headed to St Goar, which is the Rhine Valley in Germany. Most of the day was spent on the bus. Before we stopped in a small township we completed dick of the day. Now I haven't filled you in that three people on the bus are desperate to get me to be dick of the day. Apparently day was trying to nominate me for wearing white thongs. As you can see from the previous entries not even remotely close to what these guys get up to.. But today was my lucky day, bit of a conspiracy for me to have it. So this is what I was up...

May 8, 2009 - Rhine Valley

Today we re-entered Germany and made our way into the Rhine Valley. Along the way, we stopped at the university town of Heidelberg on the banks of the Neckar River. We walked through the streets, then I climbed up a hill that overlooked the town. There was a neat view of the river and all from there, and also a castle that sat atop the hill. I walked around it, and went inside. There was a ginormous wine barrel there, and also a cool little pharmacy museum. I made my way back down the large hill and caught up with the group just in time to...
