Apr 28, 2012 - Heidelberg, Germany to Houston

After spending a few days close to Ramstein Air Base, Germany enjoying the hospitality of our friends from Korea, Wayne & Jeong Elliott, they decided to take us sightseeing to the beautiful city of Heidelberg. Heidelberg is a city in south-west Germany, the fifth largest city in the State of Baden-Württemberg after Stuttgart, Mannheim, Karlsruhe and Freiburg im Breisgau. Heidelberg is part of the densely populated Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region where in 2009 over 145,000 people lived here. Heidelberg lies on the River Neckar in a steep...

Nov 24, 2011 - Thanksgiving Day on the road

Woke up on Thanksgiving morning in Oberprechtal, our last day to visit with the Familie Kern. After a nice breakfast with lots of food, we said our goodbyes to Herr and Frau Kern, took a couple of photos, and drove away toward our next stop in the Ramstein Air Base area in Rheinland-Pfalz. We stopped in Lahr (the site of a former Canadian Forces Air Base) to gas up--we got over 700 KM on the first tank of about 44 liters, and we still had a quarter tank left, so in a pinch, we could get 900 to 1000 KM from a full tank. Next, we stopped in...

Jul 4, 2011 - Ramstein air force base

After our time in bacharach we made our way to the ramstein air force base. We tried for about a week to get a reservation at the hotel on base but had no luck. We thought we would go and try anyway and hope that luck would be on our side. We took a taxi to the base and tries to get through but i needed a temporary pass and we had to turn around and get one. We ended up walking through the base to get to thw hotel to save money from taking a taxi. This base is rather large, like a small town, so walking tookr some time and it was a bit warm...

Jun 17, 2011 - Visisting My friend Summer

This week we have spent about 90 minutes southwest of Frankfurt. Well I should say that my mom and the kids spent there. We arrived at Summers house on Wednesday the 15. My mom, my kids, and myself. Thursday we traveled to Trier, this is the oldest city in Germany said to have been built by Augustus n 16 B.C. It was the capital of western Europe and heavily influenced by the Romans. While there we visited the a Roman Bath house. It was really neat and you could go down into it and see the tunnels, rooms and water systems that were used over...

Jun 10, 2011 - Ramstein AB Germany

Continuing the Journal entries beginning from us arriving at and checking into the Frankfurt Airport, missing two large bags. For some reason I avoided calling the lodging on base because I didn’t want to hear that they had no rooms available -- that would make this day w-a-y too much fun with late flights, missed connections and missing bags. So we waited at the airport for another three hours for a shuttle to drive us to Ramstein Air Base, about 65 miles away. I figured if we showed up in person they just may find a room for us. We...

Apr 16, 2011 - Ramstein AB, Germany

We traveled via Continental Air from Honolulu to Houston. #1 daughter, Terri, met us at the airport to exchange suitcases. We had previously packed a suitcase with items we thought we would need while on the Europe trip before we left Houston last year and Terri had been safeguarding it. We now had another suitcase for Europe plus one packed “for the RV” that Terri was going to babysit for us until we returned from Europe. We made the bag exchange and had a short visit over a breakfast buffet. Terri drove us back to Houston’s International...

Apr 22, 2009 - Germany

Hi- We experienced another beautiful day in Germany. We all decided we would love to come back. We took the train today to Trier. This is a great city with Roman ruins and lots to see. We attempted to take in as many sights as possible, but we ran out of time to take in everything. On a way back to the train station to get back to Ramstein we realized we were running late. So, picture the Kinahan 4 sprinting down the street, guessing where the station is and a German man pulls over...no English except he says Bahn?? (this means train) We...

Apr 21, 2009 - Germany

Hello from Germany- We arrived on a night train this morning at 9am. We had quite the adventure going on our first overnight train. Trevor Fedele, Keegan's history teacher's son, picked us up at the train station. He is currently stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base, but is moving on Tuesday to San Antonio, Texas. Trevor went out of his way today and took us on a great tour of the Rhine. The scenery and the castles are spectacular. The weather is perfect around 72 and the spring bloom is in full force. We are here for 1 more day and then...

Apr 25, 2007 - Ramstein, Germany

Carla here--we were able to get a room at Ramstein. We have to turn our rental car in today so hopefully, we can catch a flight out tomorrow. To fly space available, you have to show up at the airport ready to fly, rental cars turned in and luggage in tow. There is a shuttle at Ramstein that goes back and forth between the lodging and the passenger terminal so we won't have to get a taxi. When we arrived in Germany the taxi that took us from the airport at Ramstein to the lodging in Vogelweh (about 2 kilometers or 1.2 miles apart) cost 32...
