Oct 5, 2019 - Boppard, Germany

Marksburg is a castle on the Rhine River which is part of the Rhine Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress was used for protection rather than as a residence for royal families. It is one of only two fortress castles that has never been destroyed and the only one that had never fallen into disrepair. It March 1945, the castle was badly damaged by American artillery fired from across the Rhine. But of course it was repaired after the war. It is the best castle I've ever visited. We got to go through secret doors and dark narrow...

Jun 28, 2018 - Schloss Vollrad, Rudesheim & Boppard, German

We had a full day today visiting a winery, going through the Rhine Gorge with all the impressive castles and the two small villages of Rudesheim and Boppard, Germany. The Schloss Vollrad is a castle and a wine estate in the Rheingau wine-growing region in Germany, that has been making wine for over 800 years. The Riesling grape is the only grape variety used in the wine. Today the core building of the estate is a substantial tower house surrounded by a square pond and is only reachable by a bridge. This keep can be traced to the first third...

Aug 30, 2017 - Camping on the Rhine

We had cycled up the Mosel River some years ago so had very fond memories of the river, the vineyards, and the beautiful villages; so instead of heading home after our stay in the Black Forest, we headed west to Koblenz which is where the Rhine meets the Mosel. We stayed in an enormous campsite that had 300 sites, 100 of them right on the river. We spent three days camped on the river, looking across at the village of Braubach with the tall spire reaching up from the stone church and the Marksburg castle perched on the hill above it. We...

Sep 24, 2016 - The Rhine Gorge - castles, castles and more castles

Sept 21 Castles on the Rhine - Boppard to Rudesheim - in sunshine!! WE pulled into yet another small town in the morning and then had guided walk of the town. Again this was a very small town so most people just explored on their own. I'm sure if many of the towns we visited were build on Roman ruins, but Boppard had done their digging (they had been trying to build a parking lot) and had unearthed a fair bit of the wall and gates of the Roman town. Back to the boat for lunch and the cruise down the Rhine Gorge. Our dining room is on the...

Jun 21, 2015 - Boppard, Germany

Boppard is a charming town along the Rhine River. We enjoyed a fantastic Father's Day lunch at an Italian cafe along the water. The food was divine indeed. We walked around town and took in the sights. The atmosphere was set when we were treated to the tunes of an accordion player on the square. I did a little shopping and picture taking on my own as grandma and grandpa treated Sam to a double scoop of gelato. It is truly one of the most picturesque towns that I have ever visited.

Jun 19, 2013 - Boppard

Another very hot day. We decided to head to the town of Boppard which sits on the Rhine with no railway running in front of the town. Although small this was a little gem for a number of reasons. Firstly it had a lovely shady riverfront promenade with plenty of seats so you could watch the boats and also enjoy a good walk along its length without getting too hot. Secondly it had a lovely market place with several lovely konditorie cafes which all had good views of St Severus Church. The twin towered church built in the Romanesque style...

May 27 2013 We biked 25 miles today for a total of 320 miles. The sun showed it's face today and it did not rain. It was our best day weather wise. Breakfast was good at the Bed and Breakfast in Bacharach . The usual good fair. We biked down the Rhine river in what is considered the middle Rhine. Stopped in Oberwessel, one of the many towns with a lot history. Continued on down the river to Rhinefels castle ruins in St Goars. This the ruins are a castle built in the 12 th century. They would extract tolls from ships passing on the Rhine....
