Jul 15, 2014 - Summer Bobsledding

I haven't yet shared our discovery of a really amazing kitchen appliance: an electric egg cooker. Similar to a rice cooker, one measures out the right amount of water for soft, medium, or hard eggs, push the button and wait for the buzz. Voilá! Perfect soft-boiled eggs. It is awesome! We have used this thing every morning. Wondering if we can get one of those at home we looked it up on Amazon and were elated to discover that there are many to chose from. We will definitely get one upon our return! The sun was shining and the sky was blue as...

Jul 14, 2014 - Quiet Monday

Fireworks! Church bells! Car horns! Cheers! Those sounds filled the night when Germany defeated Argentina in the final for the World Cup last night. After we came home from Quedlinburg, we had a nice dinner of left-overs from the large amount of food made by Jochen the night before. We finished right before the final game began at 9 pm. We had missed the Saturday game between Brazil and the Netherlands due to having dinner with our hosts. The score there was higher (3-0; with Netherlands coming in 3rd place) than the game between Germany...

Jul 12, 2014 - Where Dwarfs Work

Today was the last day using the Harz Card. We are already in the positive with all of the savings we have received by using it efficiently. Before our first use of the card, Stephanie made an incredibly detailed chart considering the various options of activities, their costs, and their relative distances to ensure we maximized our 4-day card. The card cost us each 59 euros and we completed the use of and actually saved an additional 46 euros. Well done, Stephanie! We managed to get Izabella out of the house by telling her we are going...

Jul 7, 2014 - First Day in the Harz

It rained all night, but cleared up a little in the morning. The mountain near us was partially covered by mist. The air was fresh and clean. Despite the weather forecast of heavy rain, the sun was coming out and the sky was fairly clear. We slept in this morning and took our time. Izabella spent the day working on her craft projects, Zenny improved her walking skills and taking a very long nap, and Stephanie and I researched what we should do while we are here. Our plan today was simple: rest, find a tourist info office, get dinner and...

Jul 6, 2014 - Travel to the Harz Mountains

It was a whirlwind morning. We left the Netherlands for the Harz mountains today and we needed to clean the entire house we stayed in. Stephanie and I took turns cleaning, packing, making breakfast, and taking care of the kids. Poor Jennifer was so exhausted from the last few days of school that she did not even wake up until 10 am. By that point, I was drenched with sweat from vacuuming upstairs and cleaning the bathrooms for it was incredibly humid and hot today. Eventually, and surprisingly, we made it out of the house by one and said...
