Jun 16, 2011 - Part 1 - City Council

Well, Hello again. Today will be a two parter as the day has 2 parts. The first part occurred this morning. We met at the Junior Club and were escorted over to the City Hall. We were met by the city representative who gave us a wonderful presentation about Garbsen. We were all seated in the council seats and given great pens and a short informational handout about Garbsen. While the representative spoke, our own Arafel Bruce translated. She was AMAZING! The mayor could not be there as there was a major issue at one of the other school...

Jun 16, 2011 - Part 2 - The Party

And here comes Teil 2 - Well we had an amazing party. The parents were so sweet to bring all the food and plates and utensils. The students did a great job setting up and cleaning up. There were no fights and amusement was had by all. :-) The Americans performed a short program for the group. I wish we had more practice but it went off well. Everyone was laughing - which was the intent. But - remind me in the future to give them more than 6 days warning. It seems that they need to have 6 days to remember to practice before they practice....

Jun 10, 2011 - The First week is complete. :-)

Hello, Well another day is complete. It was a good solid day. After a good night sleep, we met at the Junior Club at IGS. The Junior Club is where students can purchase home made food provided by parents. They can also play board games and study between classes. To explain the scheduling at this school would take a lot of time. Ask if you want me to. One example of a difference is if a teacher can not make a class, then there is no class. They do not have substitutes. Very different from our system. They also do not have multiple choice...

Jun 9, 2011 - Susan's Diary June 9th

Susan Velazquez (looking at a ride): I think I can do this...Yeah, there's no weird drops or anything. Today we visited the local amusmant park, Heide Park. Oh my God, it was so much fun but my feet hurt from all the walking and standing in line. In our original group, it was me, Adam, Joseph, Adam's host Daniel, and Daniel's friends. We first went on a ltitle ride but at first I was scared that the boys were tricking me onto a scary one but Joseph told me to open my eyes and it wasn't so bad. It wasn't very high but pretty fast. The...

Jun 9, 2011 - Our Amusement at Heide-Park!

Guten Tag! And it was a very good day had by all. My husband and i figured out the bus system and took it to school today. We arrived first. :-) After everyone else arrived, we headed out to Heide Heym. It is an amusement park similar to Six Flag and is about 75 minutes away from Garbsen. It was the treat of the Texas Garbsen Program here. I hope everyone told their hosts "Danke"? The park was amazing and everyone seemed to have a great time. For the most part - the Germans and Texans stayed in mixed groups. The rides were spectacular. I...

Jun 8, 2011 - Susan's Diary June 8th

Chris Wallace: I don't like being abandoned...especially in a different country. I woke up today first at 5:30 and I had trouble keeping my eyes open. I thought I was still jetlagged but I knew today was my first day at school and I wanted to get up. But strill, I was tired so I decided to close my eyes just for a minute... Half asleep, I dreamt that I started to get dressed. I was standing up, holding up a burnt orange shirt against my pants, trying to decide if it matched when I realized I didn't bring a burnt orange shirt on the trip....

Jun 8, 2011 - Day 3 June 8th 2011

Hello Well today was intersesting. I posted individual information on out Todo Aleman site. Today we woke up after a great night sleep. It rained and the tempurature dropped. We rode into school with out host - Jutta. She is very nice. We met with the kids from the group and the German students. So we did not have much alone time with individuals. We learned that many of out students need to attempt German - especially those who have taken German! We learned that the kids were tired even after many hours of sleep. It was the first time...

Jun 7, 2011 - We made it!

Hello, Or as they say in Germany "Hallo!" Well after amny hours of flight and more on the Coach. We made it! All of us safe and sound. When we pulled up to the airport, we found out the air bridge was broken, so we were all escorted off the back of the plane onto waiting busses. I am jealous of Joy - she and Capitain Herr were allowed to ride the really cool lift to a special bus. I have never seen one that worked that way. We then took a bathroom break and headed through customs. We recieved our first stamp of the trip. The kids were...
