Nov 9, 2009 - Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Fussen-- My adventures for the last 3 weeks
First, I went to Berlin three weekends ago. ... It was very fun! A big group of us took the overnight train up to Berlin on Thursday night because we got Friday off of class. ... When we go to the city on Friday we went to our hostel, which was right on the border of East and West Berlin, we changed out of our travel clothes and went to see the city. ... On the tour we saw all the major site of Berlin including the Brandenburg Gate, Holocaust memorial, Parliament, Hitler’s bunker (where he and his mistress committed suicide), the square where the Nazi book burnings occurred, Checkpoint Charlie, the hotel where Michael Jackson dangled his child over the banister (I had no idea that was in Berlin) and of course the Berlin Wall. ... After, the tour we all went to find food, it was amazing how there were so many American food options available in Berlin! I went to Duncan Doughnuts, which was a great reminder of home food. ...

So we´ve been here a week now on our second Hostel, GENERATOR, and it´s like hanging out with the cast and extras from American Pie. Aug 27, 2009 - Berlin Zoo, Germany
Berlin Zoo is incredible and I hate to say it but its even better than good old Taronga Zoo, although Taronga still wins best location hands down. ... The entrance to the zoo on Budapester Strasse is the reconstructed Elephant Gate of 1899 that was completely destroyed in the last war and resurrected in all its original detail in 1984 and apparently is one of Berlin’s most photographed sights. ... My favourite animal at any zoo is the hippo so I was ridiculously excited when I heard that the Hippopotamus House was the latest addition to a long tradition of improvement and expansion of the animal enclosures and is the fourth home to Berlin’s hippopotamuses that were fortunate enough to witness the whole richly faceted range of the zoo’s architecture. ...

So, Berlin. ... Now I could see myself moving to Eastern Europe - Berlin, Berlin far more so than Prague. ... Oh yes! There was a spirit of vibrancy in Berlin that I really have a hard time resisting. ... Staying in a smaller, cheaper hostel, removed from the touristy districts gave me a chance to get to know my fellow hostellers - from Jess and Amanda, dykes from the US passing through from South East Asia, to Leonardo, the Venezuelan engineering student, to Sam, our German self-identified tour-guide and occasional translator Sam was a blast, acting as our host for our varied journeys, procuring alcohol and weed for everyone and ignoring early morning commuters while passing a joint around as we rode the U-Bahn (Berlin's equivalent of a Skytrain or Metro) back to the hostel at 5am Monday morning. ... So Berlin's got me primed to head out and meet more people, make more friends. ...

So it has been a few days since my last entry and I have certainly been making some headway. I am now in Berlin and very thankful that the 10 hour bus ride yesterday was without a hitch. ... As I was the only person on the bus who had previously been at a destination the moral was pretty high and the most common questions around: what is your name and where are you from? After going around the bus I was now identified as the sole Canadian. So it has been a few days since my last entry and I have certainly been making some headway.
