Aug 24, 2019 - Sight seeing in Munich, part 2

I almost entitled this entry as "Hump Day", because it is the middle of our trip. That also means it is laundry day. We found online two places close to our hotel (within 10 minutes), and headed for the first one. We managed to get our clothes into washers, but the dryers were out of commission. Off to the second place, which was in a large apartment complex. It was a much nicer, well-maintained laundromat. However, by the time we got done and back to the hotel, it was about 1300 and we had not left the hotel. We went to the same...

Aug 23, 2019 - Sight seeing in Munich

We all met in the breakfast area of Hotel Obermaier, and enjoyed lots of choices for our meal. Before we could depart for downtown Munich, Linda began to feel badly, and chose to stay behind. M&M and I walked to the nearest U-Bahn/S-Bahn station (about 500 yards) and tried to figure out how to buy the right ticket (a small group day-ticket), and then find the right track. We asked some help, and got to where we needed to be. A few minutes wait, and we were on our way to the Marienplatz station. My goal for today was to show M&M the old...

Aug 21, 2019 - On to Munich

After a good night's rest--complete with church bells to wake us in the morning--and a good breakfast, we took 90 minutes to explore Bamberg. This is a really neat city, and we'd come back to spend a couple of days on another trip. There are two churches (of many) in Bamberg that date to about 1020, and the city has that old feel to it. We wandered the streets, and did a little shopping, but mostly just looked at things. The fruit and vegetable stalls on the pedestrian walk were beautiful. Unfortunately, we still had a 3 to 4 hour drive to...

May 19, 2019 - Munich, Germany

Hallo from Germany, On Saturday our group of 9 took the train from Cologne to Munich. It took just over 6 hours. Our train had compartment car style seating which means that it was separated into cabins (6 seats per cabin) that open into a corridor. For part of the journey the train followed the Rhine River valley which was really quite pretty. We spotted a few castles and there was quite a bit of activity on the river. After we checked into our hotel, we went out to stretch our legs. English Garden (Englischer Garten) is a large public...

Dec 15, 2018 - Munich

I haven’t posted for a while because I’ve been having too much fun. Also, lazy. We spent one night in Berlin and then took a leisurely train ride to Munich. About four and a half hours of beautiful countryside with the occasional bucolic village tossed in for effect. Our hotel was right around the corner from the train station so we walked there, checked in and dumped our bags. Went around the corner for a massive and heavy and delicious dinner of spaetzle with cheese sauce and Munich Schnitzel- same as Weiner Schnitzel only dipped in...

Dec 12, 2018 - Germany....and snow!

Monday is best forgotten. We left our wonderful hotel in Zagreb to get to the airport. Hung around until the counter opened, checked our bags, headed to gate, left to Stuttgart (to then connect to Berlin) on time. After that, it became a long and frustrating day of missing flights, losing bags, finding bags, going thorough security multiple times and hating our carry on luggage. Got into Berlin and by the time we got to the apartment where we were staying, it was 7:30. By the time we got to the Christmas market, it was about 8:30 and...

Sep 23, 2018 - Munich

We arrived at Munich at 5:15 am Sunday afternoon and made our way to gate K34 where our plane would pick us up and deliver us to Thessaloniki. It was a 15 minute walk. It felt good after sitting for so long. When we got to our gate, this part of the terminal was empty. We went and found something to eat and by the time for boarding at 7:40, there was no place to sit. Now the tour begins.

Sep 15, 2018 - Munich tour day

Today we toured Munich by bus, hitting the highlights around the city. The pictures show some of the sights we saw. We had lunch downtown, the first disappointing meal. Service was poor, but the food was good. We watched the Glockenspiel. It chimes and re-enacts two stories from the 16th century. It consists of 43 bells and 32 life-sized figures. We were there at noon to watch the display. This evening we went to another Bavarian pub. The food was good, and the ambiance was again exciting. A soccer match was being televised, and we sure...

Sep 14, 2018 - On to Munich

Today we are moving again, this time Munich where we meet up for our river cruise. We had another perfect breakfast this morning at our hotel, the Post Gries. Check out time was 11, so we had some time to trudge around some of the nearby homes. We are in a valley with mountains on both sides of us. I’ve included several pictures of places we saw along the way. The train ride from Bolzano to Munich is a little over 4 hours long. Bolzano was a great spot that Cathy picked for a stop. Had a very educational and picturesque stay. The train...

Apr 28, 2018 - Munich Day 2

Day 2 was a tour of Downtown Munich...but those pictures are on my camera and I don’t have my laptop to down load them to. The pictures here were taken at the hotel area where I used my iPhone. More to come as I get going and get home....having a great TRIP. Leave today to head to Pasau to get on the boat for the river cruise down the Danube! Can’t wait!

Apr 28, 2018 - What A Day In Munich

Our day started in München (Munich) with a delicious buffet breakfast at our hotel. For the next 9 hours we did the locals walking tour of Munich and then rode the train to Dachau. Ella, a local guide, walked us to all the major sites in Old Town Munich. We first visited a contemporary work-live-shop space named Fünf höfe space that was beautiful. Architecturally it had a lot of green species from the ceiling and a floor level. We then visited a beautiful Italian style church that was beautiful and dedicated to the King and Queen’s son....

Apr 27, 2018 - Welcoming our Friends to Europe

Excitement in the air this morning as we were meeting our friends of from South Carolina at the Munich Airport. We drove there and Ben dropped me and our luggage off at the gate we had found yesterday. He headed off to drop off the rental car and walking back, Ben ducked into the arrivals concourse and immediately saw out Uniworld escort. He rushed about 1/3 mile down to where I was waiting and we ran (as much as 2 old people can run) back to Gate D just as Robbie and Janice Hunter came through the customs gate. We had a nice ride into...
