Jan 9, 2013 - Christmas in Germany

Christmas in Germany was rather uneventful. My main objective was to spend some time with my mom. She will turn 85 and is still very healthy. My hikes and excursions were somewhat limited due to weather and my mom's desire to spend time at home. We have two holidays for Christmas in Germany and on the 2nd day, which would boxing day in some parts of the world, my brother and family came to visit from Stuttgart.a We went out for dinner at a local restaurant, called "Gasthaus zum Ochsen". You have to check it out if you ever get into the...

Aug 15, 2012 - Germany Black Forrest 15-27

We arrived in Germany travelling through Strasbourg and finally to Brigachtal in the Black Forrest where Simona’s Aunt lives with her husband Klaus and Son Frank. We arrived before dark and were pleased to get out of the car after about 9 hours of driving. We planned to spend the next or so week based here till we moved on to Italy to meet up with Joe. The first coupe of days included washing and catching up on a bit of sleep. I also managed my first sunburn sitting out in the yard finishing a book which I quite enjoyed (thanks Julie, loved...

Dec 7, 2010 - Freiburg to Villingen

From Freiburg we turn east towards Villingen on the eastern edge of the Black Forest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Forest) area. It was to prove to be one of the best drives we had done so far. Aug 1, 2009 - Lahr Part Deux

It was really tough to say ‘see you again’ (auf wiedersehen) to Oliver and Polyana! Of course Oliver said “or you can stay!”; but we really had to go. We really felt warmth and friendship there and are confident we will return! Thank you again Ollie and Polyana (Popoa??)!! We had news from Lahr that once again, I am a real human being!! I have a Passport!! I’m somebody! The French Police officer that could not understand me any better than I could understand him really did send the Passport to the Gruner Baum Hotel in Lahr! What a good...

Jul 29, 2009 - Couch Surfing 1

Our Couch surfing hosts, Oliver and Polyana had sent an e mail with their address, and rough directions to their house. He had suggested we get close, and call. I had planned to get close, and take out the GPS, punch in the address, and drive to their place. Oliver’s directions said he was near the hospital, so I followed hospital signs, then saw the Aral gas station he had mentioned. We stopped there to pick up a bottle of wine, and some flowers for the lady of the house. I was selecting the flowers when someone behind me said...
