Dec 16, 2015 - Mercedes, Martin, Mineralbad

Our first visit to Germany, for a week in Stuttgart, was focused on the Mercedes museum, a weekend visit to Martin, two days at the Mineralbad and lots of walking and eating. We arrived last Wednesday in the late afternoon, and followed our directions to find our Airbnb hosts. This was our first dive into german and our guesswork was a bit underwhelming, but we found our nest, settled in, and at the recommendation of our hosts we went a few blocks for a german dinner at Amadeus at charlottenplatz. The dinner was good, although very limited...

Dec 20, 2014 - Stuttgart and Gerlingen

Today we took the U-Bahn from Gerlingen into Stuttgart, about a half-hour ride. We first scouted out where our train on Monday will leave from, so we know where to go and what to expect (one small flight if stairs) when we come with luggage. We then walked down Koenigstrasse, the Main Street, and saw various street artists including one who travels with a grand piano -- we liked his music. His name is Arne Schmitt. Then we walked through part of the Stuttgart Christmas market, because it is so big we didn't get to it all, in the time we...

Dec 19, 2014 - Nürnberg to Gerlingen

There is a new food fad in Germany since I was here last, and it's called Curry Wurst (curry sausage.) I saw it at the Christmas markets in Berlin and Bamberg, and finally in Nürnberg I tried some. It's pretty good, although a bit sweeter taste than I expected. I guess I'm used to Indian curry, which has a different taste. Speaking of Indian, we ate at an Indian restaurant in Nürnberg directly across from our hotel, and we noticed there seemed to be more German guests than English-speaking ones. Probably the English tourist want to try the...

Jun 10, 2014 - In Germany!

We arrived in Germany dazed and tired but were happy to be welcomed by Frank with a smile. He drove us to his lovely home just outside of Stuttgart. In Nuertingen, we stopped by their local bakery for some fresh bread. Lukas and I rotated naps and eventually had to wake up the kids. It was great taking a walk into the village to buy deli meat, cheese and bread. On the way back to the house, we stopped at a fruit and vegetable stand. The strawberries were smaller than those we'd get in the US but packed with flavor. Later in the day, we went...

Jun 1, 2014 - I found my next car!

(Yeah! Internet that works. Now I can upload all my journals) This morning Dad Jason and I went to the Porsche Museum. So cool. We all walked away with a new appreciation for Porsches. Did you know that Mr. Porsche was the guy behind the VW bug? His big goal was to have an affordable reliable car for the people. I attached my next car. Jason seems to think I may have to wait a bit longer for it but we will see :). Jason actually lucked out because they had a special exhibition of the 24 hour race cars there so he got to see a bunch of cars...

May 31, 2014 - Stuttgart bound!

Maybe because it was a late night, or because of chianti or because 2 weeks out of our normal routine has us sleepy, Jason and I didn't wake up until 10am. Lindsey and David were already in Frankfurt and mom and dad were finalizing our trip for the day. We had a great breakfast and learned how to properly make rosti. Tamara and Sasha joined us and after breakfast we visited Tamara's work again Opel car dealership. Jason had fun as Simone took him out and they test drove a camaro. Dad, Simone, Brigetta and I then played Jas while Jason...

Jan 27, 2014 - Stuttgart, Germany

January 26, 2014 I am beginning to like my new watch. It’s a Rolex Explorer II with a black face. I have had a couple of really nice watches in the past but gave them to my brothers before going to South America. I bought the watch new from a Rolex dealer in CP. I got the box and all the paperwork to go with it. I paid less than Canadian retail but more than US retail. It’s 9:30am and I am at a Starbucks in Stuttgart. The sole reason why I have come to Germany is to see the Mercedes Benz museum. It is the best museum I have ever seen. At...

Aug 23, 2012 - Stuttgart Germany

The Porsche Museum. A great day, Simona even got excited by the building and the cars within, the interactive displays were great at explaining some of the cars systems and I think Simona now understands the workings of an internal combustion engine. we spent almost 3 and a half hours there without getting board. the sales showroom was conveniently located across the road. :-) The building is quite impressive however as a defect focused professional, it seems the floor stone slabs failed, the large stone tiles were all cracked I assume from...

Jun 15, 2012 - Stuttgart

After two days in Konstanz in the southeast of Germany, we headed north about 120 miles to the city of Stuttgart for a three day stay. Stuttgart is one of the largest and most important cities in Germany. It started as a stud farm known as Stutengarten, thus its name, Stuttgart. It is beautifully situated among picturesque hills and is a well-recognized cultural center. Its other claim to fame is the Mercedes Benz Museum that we visited. HOTEL AM SLOSSGARTEN We chose this five star hotel for its excellent location with the main...

Germany 2012

Jun 9, 2012 - Stuttgart

First up today, Vicki and I went with Thomas into Sindlefingen to the fresh markets. Sindelfingen is the closest town and is at the headwaters of the Schwippe (a tributary of the Würm) It is also the site of a Mercedes-Benz assembly plant. The food at the market all looked so good and fresh. The flowers were also beautiful and Vicki couldn’t get over the fact that 10 long stem roses cost only 4 Euro. We went for a walk around the old town that has some amazing old buildings. The first documented mention of the town was in 1155 and we saw...

Jul 8, 2011 - Greece to Germany

Our travel day started with a quick motor up to Gouvia Marina where the sailboat was scheduled to be dropped off. We made coffee then showered and packed underway. We sailed by the 300 year old Venetian boat yards on the lovely coast north of Corfu. Our captain Andreas said goodbye and left us to finish our packing while he caught the ferry for home. We had a nice breakfast overlooking the 960 yacht berths, which included two amazing 45 metre twin masted sailboats. We now need two taxis to get our luggage and growing teens to the airport....

Jul 7, 2011 - Stuttgart, Germany: Mercedes-Benz

The following morning we drove to Stuttgart to see the Mercedes-Benz Museum. We spent a day visiting the impressive building housing four stories worth of exhibits. It was interesting to learn that Benz and Daimler each independently developed engines and vehicles, residing within 60 miles of each other, yet they never met. As we now know, the two companies would eventually merge.
