Oct 3, 2017 - Day 5 Via Rhôna Le Cheylard to Cruas

Overview Had breakfast then went for a walk around the town before getting bikes and riding back down the Dolce Via. As we were not in a hurry today we could take plenty of the photos that we didn't have time for yesterday. And the riding was easier ! 50+km down hill 𯘊. Showers kept coming and going and it was hard to know what to wear. We were constantly putting on and taking off our rain jackets. Took many photos of the old 'mills' along the river way down in the gorges. Many were apparently old silk weaving factories where the machines...

Oct 2, 2017 - Day 4 Dolce Via. Valence to Le Cheylard

Overview Bought new phone this morning as soon as shops opened. After much mucking around and being unable to rebuild my phone from my iCloud account, I finally accepted it and just started a new phone setup. Annoying but at least I have a phone working. Headed off at 12:30 after hotel checkout and booking a place for tonight. Gave us a challenge to get there on time (woman leaving at 6pm... ~63km to go so should be ok. We moved it for the first 23km,as we went along the via Rhona. Then we moved to the Dolce Via, which required a tourist...

Sep 30, 2017 - Day 2 Via Rhôna. Condrieu to Tournon sur Rhone

Day's Overview Leisurely start and ride into Condrieu to get some breakfast and picnic food from supermarket. Made 2 different supermarket stops. Sep 29, 2017 - Day 1 Via Rhôna Givors to to Les Roches de Condrieu

Day's Overview Had breakfast at the Airbnb then collected the bikes. As the exit from Lyon was reputable poorly marked and on busy roads we took the advice of the bike shop guy (Scott, from VeloStrada ) and caught a train to Givors, which is just out of Lyon on the Via Rhôna. Once there we bought a picnic lunch from a supermarket then after a little searching we found the marked via Rhona trail. It was great to be back on the bike again. We went through a variety of countryside, little towns , vineyards , orchards, and market gardens....

Sep 28, 2017 - Prep for the Via Rhôna

Before I got up Sarah popped her head in to say goodbye and wish me fun on my bike ride, before she headed off to school. Beni had left me a farewell note on the kitchen bench wishing me good weather! And Terry accompanied me to the station on her electric bike, which was lovely. What a send off. Got to Geneva to change trains and lo and behold although I got a hook in the train to hang my bike from, there were no first class carriages ( which is what I had bought and what my ticket said for this particular train...and presumably what I'd...

Jul 15, 2017 - Day 18: In Lyon then flight home.

Day 18: In Lyon then train to the airport before flying home. Weather: 32C. Sunny all of the day. Steps: 12 000 (7.1km). After a good sleep and my final breakfast in Lyon, I packed everything up and was able to leave these items in the security store for luggage at the hotel. It was late morning by now, so I headed back up the car free street of Rue Victor Hugo heading towards the tourism office. I did pass a lovely children’s wear store (we have previously purchased from the brand/chain of stores elsewhere in France) so made just a few...

Jul 14, 2017 - Bastille Day

We decided to check our bags because it was a full flight to Philadelphia and we thought it would be dicey to find room in the overhead bin. Plus they were heavy. No problems at the Philadelphia airport. Had lunch at Legal Seafood. The plane to Paris was less than half full. People were moving around and finding 3seats together to sleep. We arrived on time in Paris and both bags arrived safely. Long walk to Train Station. We were able to exchange our 2pm tickets for 10am tickets and got into Lyon at noon. To hotel and out to eat at...

Why Stop Now

Jul 11, 2017 - Day 17: In Lyon

Day 17: In Lyon. Weather: 17-29C but 90% humidity. Sunny most of the day. Steps: 19 900 (12.4km). After waking during the night, I turned off the a/c and left the door open which brought some refreshing cooler air. Today was the day to visit Pérouges, a medieval walled town 30 km northeast of Lyon. I had read about it and a colleague recommended it as well so, after breakfast, I was on the tram again to go to the main station to catch a train. I saw there was one at 10:12am and hoped to catch it but after waiting in the queue to purchase...

Jul 10, 2017 - Day 16: In Lyon

Day 16: In Lyon. Weather: 17-28C but 90% humidity. There was a BIG thunderstorm early evening and it pelted down flooding streets and causing the trams to stop for a short time. Sunny and humid afterwards. Steps: 13 800 (7.5km). After breakfast I decided to use my bus pass to visit the Confluence Shopping Centre which is located on reclaimed land making a peninsula to where the two rivers meet. I walked up to Place Bellecour (FYI – the third largest square in France but the largest pedestrian only square in Europe, as others allow cars but...

Jul 9, 2017 - Day 15: In Lyon

Day 15: In Lyon all day! Weather: Pleasant in the morning with cloud and a lovely breeze but warmed up in the afternoon with the sun out – maximum reached was 30C. Steps: 21 200 (12.2km) - that's a lot of steps!!! It was a warm night so the a/c was working well, thankfully!! I ate my breakfast here, as it is convenient and the range was good and their ‘cold’ milk was ‘cold’ as it was kept in a refrigerated environment!!!! After my daily chat with Jane (NO BABY NEWS!!) I walked across to the park, Place Carnot, opposite. There is a regular...

Jul 8, 2017 - Day 14: In Lyon.

Day 14: In Lyon from Annecy. Weather: Very HOT all day – maximum reached was 37C. It was 30C at 10:00pm. Steps: 10 100 (5.6km). Last night was not as hot as the night before, so having the window open was enough. I had checked my route last night and decided I would take an A tollway as it cut the travel time by over 1 hour and I thought it was worth it as I had to had the car returned to Avis by 11:30am. After breakfast, I settled the account, collected my parking discount ticket and head to the car park, luggage in tow. It was just after...

Jul 7, 2017 - Day 13: In Annecy

Day 13: In Annecy. Weather: Very warm, to HOT – 33C. Blue skies and full sun all day. Yes the same as yesterday, and the day before!! Summer is here! Steps: 14 250 (8.1km). It was a warm night so the a/c was on and off at different times. I also left the window open for a while when the a/c was off as it was cooler outside. Sleep in morning until 8:30am then breakfast inhouse – good variety but when I felt the jug of lait froid [cold milk] (as one does), it was certainly not cold but room temperature – not too appealing! I asked the lady...
