Jul 25, 2012 - Lyon & Vienne

While Ivan did more walking around Lyon this morning (in 90 degrees) , I got 5 days of blog entries done despite the system running slowly. In the afternoon we took a guided walking tour of Vienne. Cathedral St. Maurice was impressive but more so was the Roman Temple of Augustus & Livia. (Folks who had been to Athens were very impressed, too.) We had a min-train ride up to the Mount Pipet Chapel and to see a great panoramic view of the city. From there we got a great look a the Roman Theater still in use today. After the 2-hour tour Ivan...

Jul 24, 2012 - Lyon

Christian was our great guide in this, France's 2nd largest city. He was so fun as he described the French as “complicated” and clued us into French life and customs as we toured. We saw the beautiful Basilica Notre Dame (1880) despite a great deal of scaffolding inside that obscured a lot of its beauty. It has four octagonal towers and an adjacent bell tower so it has earned the nickname the “upside-down elephant”. It sits on Fourviere Hill and on clear days one can see Lyon spread out before you. Not today; too much smog. By coach we...

Jul 23, 2012 - Beaune, France

Our first breakfast on this Viking ship. It was crowded and a little difficult to navigate the tight buffet area. With our “little black boxes” (listening devices) and ear piece we boarded a bus for the drive to Beaune [Bone] in the Burgundy Region. We had an excellent guide with a great sense of humor. The main sight today was the Hotel Dieu, a 15th century hospital for the poor sick folks; quite a wonderful place for those days and the poor health conditions. On to a wine “cave” (their word for an underground cellar) for a wine tasting....

Jun 6, 2012 - Day 5 Lyon

HI I can't believe another day has gone by! Today we woke up early at 5:15 and left Paris by 6:30. We wanted to avoid the traffic in the morning in Paris. We had no problems leaving Paris. Today we ensured that we had the correct location typed into the GPS. It once again rained on our travels to Lyon, France. We arrived in Lyon around 11:30 just as we planned this time. We are staying at the Hotel de la Cite. It is a attached to a large convention centre with the World Trade building in the same area. Our hotel here in Lyon is much nicer...

May 28, 2012 - Arles and on to Lyon

Thursday came with more sunshine, but I wasn’t disposed to get up at 6:00 and drive an hour to join the gypsies! Instead I decided to stay closer to Arles. I headed into town (about half an hour away) and found parking. I have gotten spoiled by the picturesque little towns—Arles is definitely a small city. I am definitely glad I went to St Remy for the market day. I visited a couple of places that I saw on tour 10 years ago—the Roman Arena, the cathedral, the cloisters, the Forum square, and then out to the Antiquities museum by the river....

Apr 25, 2012 - Lyon Part 2

Day 2 in Lyon I hope one day the world sorts out the internet so that it is not so frustrating for travellers! I have been trying to send more photos but can't seem to do it at the moment. I know I sent one massive 7mb file a few days ago and I apologise but then again I haven't had any complaints? I have now (I think) sorted out how to make the file smaller. We have a half hour wait for our taxi that will take us to the hire car and then the nerve wracking drive out of the city. Once we hit the country we should breathe easier. We have...

Apr 24, 2012 - Lyon Part 1

Lyon is the third largest metropolis in France and they must have had very strong willed town planners because there is very little high rise- well virtually no really tall buildings. So a view over the city is a delight as you will see - mostly a mass of orange roofs. It is quite a charming city. It is certainly big enough to have two large railway stations. We arrived at one - Part Dieu - and looked for our hotel that we had carefully chosen to be within walking distance. Only trouble was, as it turned out, it was the wrong station. It...

Dec 28, 2011 - French Riviera to Chateau de Fontager (Lyon)

Monaco was great last night. What a beautiful place. We drove on the road where Grace Kelly was killed in the accident and we also drove on a part of the F1 race track. John the coach driver was put to the test!! Had a wonderful 3 course french dinner with wine as usual. Then we went to the Monte Carlo Casino. Weren't there for long but what an experience. 3 Ferrari's parked in front of the Casino...and it is all very la-di-da! We didn't really play anything, but one of our group: H played 50 Euro on the rolette tables and walked away with...

Aug 18, 2011 - Paris to Lyon & onto our new home in Saint Ismier

With Lews ingenuity he managed to charm the driver of a truck delivering beer kegs to the bar next to our hotel to let him borrow his trolley for our suitcases. This meant we didn’t have to lug them 1 by 1 back down the cobblestones laneway to get our transfer to the train station. Off we then headed to Gare de Lyon for our train and although everything is in French their boards are very clear so we had no problems. They don’t announce the platform that your train is leaving from until 20 minutes before departure and then it is a massive...

May 18, 2011 - To Lyon

Day 3: We woke up, packed, checked out and grabbed the train. Once we arrived in Lyon, we unloaded and then headed out to explore the city. We were right in old town, which really is the only area a tourist should stay in. Lyon old town is nice and had several small streets filled with shops, restaurants, cafes & bars.

May 14, 2011 - Lounging in Lyon

We've been fairly low key in Lyon. We're both starting to feel like we're slowing down a bit in terms of ambition to site see. Today was absolutely gorgeous, hot and sunny and not a cloud in the sky. We hiked up to the basilica today to see the panoramic view of the city, walked through Old Lyon a bit, and then made our way to Tete d'Or for a picnic lunch and relaxation in the park. Our gastronomic experience is set for tonight - we tried last night, but we had one of our "walk around for two hours trying to find a restaurant to eat at"...
