Sep 4, 2015 - Lyon - Church & Silk

We were up really early this morning and had breakfast then boarded buses which took us up the hill to Notre Dame of Lyon. We looked over Lyon from a viewpoint and got a wide panorama of the city. It was a bit hazy, but otherwise a good sight. Apparently on a good day you can see Mt. Blanc, but not today. We then were free to tour the Church which was a typical Catholic Church, though very large. It was decorated in part by mosaics rather than frescoes. We descended from the hill on the bus and toured a few sights, stopping at a trompe...

France & Rome

Jul 2, 2015 - Lyon

Lyon We arrived in Lyon from Bastia late at night and after navigating the transport system - closures on the rail line from the airport to the city every night until the end of the year. The website didn't mention it in our research and planning for the trip, nor were there any signs at the airport. Once on the alternate bus, a woman handed out helpful information on leaflets detailing the line works. Ah well, at least we were on our way once more. It was midnight by the time we checked in. We awoke to Lyon in all it's glory - sunny,...

Jan 8, 2015 - Lyon

8am start today, still dark as we left. Had to stop to fill our LPG gas bottle which was showing almost empty after lots of use of the gas fire & the fridge. By the way the fridge runs off the motorhome battery when we are driving along. LPG gas is nice & cheap & lots of petrol station sell it now so we plug in & fill up just like filling with diesel. Usually costs about £5 to fill our small 6kg bottle. Another foggy start to the day but not as cold as it has been. We had decided to stop in Lyon for the night at a proper camp site in order...

Ian, Geoff and Pauline finally meet over a meal in the old part of Lyon. Ian had flown in from Sydney and travelled down by train. He was looking forward to a sleep, and hopefully a quiet room at the youth hostel which is an old heritage listed building high up above Lyon with wonderful views.

Jul 2, 2014 - On to the Next

Hey everyone| I sure thought that this blog was going to be easier than it has been. We have been so busy seeing everything and if I do have time it is usually at this hour which is 11:30pm or later and I am so exhausted by then. Some places don't have wi-fi but that will be more in the eastern countries. I have seen so much! The Arc de Triomphe, Palace de Versailles, Notre Dame, the Mona Lisa, and of course went to the top of the Eiffel Tower! It is unreal!! I cannot believe I am here sometimes. A couple on our tour got engaged at the top...

Feb 3, 2014 - Lyon, France

January 31, 2014 The hotel here in Lyon says 500kg or eight persons. They grow’em thin in France? I just paid 15 Euro for the breakfast at the hotel. There is no fucking way I could eat/drink this much bread, cheese, yoghurt and coffee. February 1, 2014 Well I am done with France. I had a shitty day yesterday. I had a fuck of a time finding RRconcept and when I left there I couldn’t find a hotel. RRconcept is closed for the weekend. I was going to stay until Monday so I could visit them again. The are in a small village outside of Lyon...

Nov 14, 2013 - Day 46 Lyon

We were both anxious about waking up for our morning train and ended up leaving 20 minutes earlier than planned. We were heading to Spain by 7AM but have four train changes so we didn't know for sure when we would get there. Between the first two trains we had 1 1/2 hours so we walked into town to find breakfast. Little did we know a hot breakfast was not available anywhere. They do not cook before noon! So back to the train station we went settling for a cold muffin and coffee while the woman next to us was having a beer! It wasn't long...

Nov 13, 2013 - Day 45 Lyon

We had an early breakfast so we could have enough time to tour Lyon. We had hoped to take a "Hop On-Hop Off Bus" but they weren't running today for some unknown reason. As a result we walked and then we walked a little more, while doing our share of climbing. Sadly Old Town is built on a hill. We started with the Roman Amphitheater which was very impressive. It was built between 25B.C. and 100A.D. and is still used today for concerts and performances. The La Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourviere was amazing and was one of favorite of churches...

Nov 12, 2013 - Day 44 Lyon

It was a beautiful morning walk to the train station. No beggars and no crowds, very nice! After all the train ticket hassle yesterday by 8AM we were on our high speed train to Lyon France with no problem. We traveled through the mountains again with fantastic views much like on our ride to Milan. However our views this time included beautiful wine groves terraced on the mountain sides. We had to switch trains in Geneva but we had over an hour to find the right track. We found a nice restaurant for lunch but these Swiss prices take all the...
