Sep 6, 2019 - Days 6 and 7 in Lyon

2 days in Lyon Highlights Thursday 5th - 2 hour ´free’ walking tour. ( we gave €10 tip per person). The guide was very good - Saw the old town area including, the cathedral, traboules (covered passageways), silk weaving loom, bouchons ( traditional cafes) and part of the new town area. If in Lyon I recommend this guide www.freetourlyon.com - Tom was delighted with the guide’s recommendation for a coffee shop. He finally got his favourite style of coffee (flat white) and the barista was very nervous once she found out we were Australian....

Sep 4, 2019 - Day 5 Villebois to Lyon

Day 5 Highlights - again a variety of very busy roads (luckily not for long each time) - Route was quite clearly marked but as we approached Lyon the signposts disappeared for about 10km. Luckily I had the gpx route on my phone so we mostly avoided main roads. - Nice riding thru the huge park on outskirts of Lyon , but has to keep our wits about us as the signposting g was difficult to see and understand at times - VERY steep climb to our accommodation in Croix Rousse. - Lovely apartment overlooking a large square. - AirBnb host...

Aug 25, 2019 - Back in France

August 6 – 8 On our way back to No. 1 we decided to spend a couple of days in Corfu – so after a bus and ferry ride we ended up in an apartment more or less in the centre of the old town. Wandered around the old town – at night it was heaving and during the day went up to the fort and the lighthouse to enjoy wonderful views of the city and surrounding islands. Brilliant. We don’t know whether we will be back in waters again. August 8 - 11 Back in Condrieau France. Spent a couple of days in the marina getting ready for our onward journey....

Summer 2019

May 30, 2018 - Lyon

Day 12. Lyon 30/5/18. Wednesday. Overcast 15-24 degrees Today was Ian’s day out. Lorraine not feeling the best, so decided to stay in. Normal excursion process, get ticket and onto coach after checking out of ship. Doing the sight seeing tour and local tastings at local market. Coach drove around Lyon, with guide pointing out usual points of interest. There was one building that had a fresco depicting imagines of famous local identities. Inventor of loom for weaving silk, the brothers who invented the camera and many others. Silk production...

May 29, 2018 - Day 9 - Tour Lyon

Today was the first complete day in the same location since we arrived in France. We had a relative early breakfast in the hotel before venturing to Vieux Lyon. This is the old part of Lyon and we spent considerable time walking the streets noting the age of the buildings, their period design features and the proliferation of restaurants that now have taken there place. This a genuine historical area of narrow walk ways, cobble stone streets and leaning walls that deserves heritage protection. After a brief coffee only break and having left...

May 29, 2018 - Vienne to Belleville to Lyon

Day 11. Vienne to Belleville to Lyon 29/5/18. Monday. Cloudy, sunny, scattered showers 15-26 degrees Today Ian and I did separate tours. I travelled on an old Roman road which was built in 1000 BC. Stops were made every 30km, as this was how far the soldiers could walk in a day. We went to the medieval village of Oingt (pronounced ‘wa’ as a baby crying) which was very small and no touristy shops, and lovely. The scenery was outstanding as we drove for an hour through the beautiful, green hills of Beaujolais wine growing area, stopping...

May 28, 2018 - Day 8 - Lyon

I was up early for what was the fruitless task of finding an internet connection. The property is extensive and the furnishing and fittings are dark timber and reds. It has been well cared for and many items of furniture are irreplaceable. We had breakfast at the hotel before a stroll through the garden and departure at 0930hrs. The drive to Lyon was by the motorway with 130 Kph the standard. As we approached Lyon the traffic for late Monday morning became quite heavy requiring our driver to be that little bit more aware and defensive....

Sep 28, 2017 - Prep for the Via Rhôna

Before I got up Sarah popped her head in to say goodbye and wish me fun on my bike ride, before she headed off to school. Beni had left me a farewell note on the kitchen bench wishing me good weather! And Terry accompanied me to the station on her electric bike, which was lovely. What a send off. Got to Geneva to change trains and lo and behold although I got a hook in the train to hang my bike from, there were no first class carriages ( which is what I had bought and what my ticket said for this particular train...and presumably what I'd...

Jul 15, 2017 - Day 18: In Lyon then flight home.

Day 18: In Lyon then train to the airport before flying home. Weather: 32C. Sunny all of the day. Steps: 12 000 (7.1km). After a good sleep and my final breakfast in Lyon, I packed everything up and was able to leave these items in the security store for luggage at the hotel. It was late morning by now, so I headed back up the car free street of Rue Victor Hugo heading towards the tourism office. I did pass a lovely children’s wear store (we have previously purchased from the brand/chain of stores elsewhere in France) so made just a few...

Jul 14, 2017 - Bastille Day

We decided to check our bags because it was a full flight to Philadelphia and we thought it would be dicey to find room in the overhead bin. Plus they were heavy. No problems at the Philadelphia airport. Had lunch at Legal Seafood. The plane to Paris was less than half full. People were moving around and finding 3seats together to sleep. We arrived on time in Paris and both bags arrived safely. Long walk to Train Station. We were able to exchange our 2pm tickets for 10am tickets and got into Lyon at noon. To hotel and out to eat at...

Why Stop Now

Jul 11, 2017 - Day 17: In Lyon

Day 17: In Lyon. Weather: 17-29C but 90% humidity. Sunny most of the day. Steps: 19 900 (12.4km). After waking during the night, I turned off the a/c and left the door open which brought some refreshing cooler air. Today was the day to visit Pérouges, a medieval walled town 30 km northeast of Lyon. I had read about it and a colleague recommended it as well so, after breakfast, I was on the tram again to go to the main station to catch a train. I saw there was one at 10:12am and hoped to catch it but after waiting in the queue to purchase...
