May 18, 2010 - Grenoble

Tuesday 18 May Big sleep in. Drove into Grenoble 10m. Eventually found a carpark and went up the telephonic to the old Bastille. Great views of the city, French Alps, Mt Blanc, Vercors, St Egreve, Rue De Liberation the longest street in France. Down to the old ville and to Victor Hugo Square for lunch. Pizza and Creppes. Del had fun with the creppe maker about English and French language. Sun shining but still got the chill. Back through the old ville and little shopping. Found our favourite bookshop still there. Then on to a special bridge...

Models tell the story of the fairytale from room to room. We enjoyed the attic. It had many bits and pieces up there and we hadnt been that high before. the boys enjoyed the dungeon and couldnt believe prisoners were kept there. Drove back to camp for early dinner and then went for a drive to Villaines les Rochers famous for wicker baskets. Unfortunately there is a...

June 10th, 2009 HIGHLIGHTS OF LONDON (June 10-17) Arriving in London after 48hrs of layovers in African airports, we arrived on a tube strike day. Thank goodness for Kristin received us there and lead us disoriented travelers back to her home. Grocery shopping! Crispy veggies, yougurt, cheese and hearty loaf of brown bread! Things we missed in W. Africa. Roof top bus tour – we loved being cheezy tourists seeing all of the London sites. Kristin treated us to our a delicious drink of Pimms. Cambridge – had a picnic with Kristin and her...

Aug 25, 2008 - Driving tour of France

After having taken a number of holidays where we essentially 'flew in/flew out' we decided that it was time to try something different by hiring a car and making the journey the holiday rather than just the destination. In our very typical way, all we did was book the car and a spot on the ferry from Dover to Calais, with no real plans as to where we were going or what we wanted to do. So after a very early morning drive and then leaving the white cliffs of Dover behind us, we arrived in Calais and decided to head towards the town of...

Feb 7, 2008 - Grenoble, part deux

Friends and Family, I am once again writing from Grenoble, France, where I have spent the last week with Alex Fermanis, taking it easy, trying to shake off a cold. I said goodbye to my farm family last week, where I had an absolutely wonderful stay. The weather was beautiful for January (plants were already budding), and I had a great time working in the yard with Emmanuel, my host, and his uncle, Jean-Pierre. I had plenty of free time to read, write music, go for hikes in the French countryside. I also got to take a few day trips out of...

Dec 1, 2006 - Delphine + Ashley = Watch out Grenoble!

It was November 29 and I was sitting in my classroom thinking about how bored I was. I was trying to think of things that I would rather be doing, and what did I come up with? Why visiting Ashley in Grenoble, of course! So, I called Ashley after class getting her opinion on if it was a good idea to come visit that Friday. It was! I rushed to the train station, but my train ticket, and then laughed to myself at how incredibly random it was that I planned a trip two days before leaving for that same trip. I arrived in Grenoble just in time...

May 31, 2006 - Rhone Alps

We left Grasse, near the Cote d'Azur after spending a week in brilliant sunshine and sweltering heat and drove for an hour into the mountains watching the sky getting darker and darker; that was followed by thunder and lightning and by the time we had climbed several hundred meters, we encountered a blizzard with very cold temperatures. This is spring in southern France? The area is very mountainous and given over to rustic lodges, hiking trails and ski hills. We come from a city of mountains so were surprised how overwhelmed and...

Europe 2005-2006

Jun 30, 2005 - Hiking in the French Alps...Jenn, you would be proud!!

We had to be up at 6:00 this morning to get to Gare Lyon by 8:30 for our three hour train ride to Grenoble. When Mom and I arrived in Grenoble this morning, we (as usual) had no idea where to go or what to do, so we headed in the direction of the tourist office. My guidebook didn't offer much information beyond directions to the tourist office and a recommendation to take some cable car to the top of some mountain and hike some trail back down. But apparently, that was enough to convince us to spend the day there. We found the tourist...

Nov 18, 2004 - Evian, Lyon and Orange - France

Apologises for the bad typing? its a French keyboard, the A and Q and most other keys are in the wrong places. Some imaginative reading may be required. We left Lautertbrunnen and our lovely hostel on Sunday morning and travelled down to Montreux-Vevey on Lake Geneva. We actually thought the hostel was in Montreux but it was a stop before in Vevey. We had to get back on the next train and apologise to the French speaking ticket inspectors. I let Rach do the talking and they seemed to be happy to let us continue. The next day we continued...
