Aug 23, 2007 - Courmayeur to Switzerland!

We depart La Saxe at 8am and took a short bus ride to the TMB trail.... -We were told today will be a much shorter day. We should reach our Refuge for the night at around 2pm. I was excited because today we will be crossing over to Switzerland! -The hike was much easier today...no rain but overcast - so perfect hiking conditions. We took a rest at Refuge Elena at about 10 am, after this will be a tougher hike uphill towards the pass. -Once again, we hiked in single file due to the narrow trail... -At about noon, we reached to border of...

Aug 22, 2007 - La Saxe - Courmayeur (REST DAY)

Finally....a rest day after 3 days of tough hike! Have no idea how relieved I was to have a nice hot shower and comfy bed to sleep in! La Saxe Courmayeur is a nice little ski resort town, main town square has long narrow streets lined up with shops. The view is amazing all around. Since we all had sore muscles, we had decided to visit the famous Thermal Hot Springs (Terme di Pre-Saint-Didier) about 15 minutes away by bus. We arrived at the spa around 11 o'clock. Robes, lotions & flip flops are provided (which is included in the entrance fee...

My steps became slower and...

Aug 15, 2007 - Chamonix

This morning I said goodbye to the tour members and hopped a train for Chamonix. I should rephrase that, I hopped several trains. In fact, several more than I had expected. The trip was supposed to take 6 hours and involve 2 train changes. The longest part of the trip was on the high-speed TGV train from Paris to Bellgarde. Then I was supposed to catch a train to St. Gervais and from there, another to Chamonix. When I got to Bellgarde, which is a pretty small station, things were a bit confusing. They are doing construction at the station...

Mar 22, 2007 - Heading towards the Alps

Deb: This was always going to be a crappy day - travelling by train and bus from Como via Milan to Courmayeur via Aosta. We did have a good find for the day - the manager at Hotel Frienze recommended the Como market on Thursday morning. It has been funny seeing so many of Melbourne's influences here in Italy, when I first went to Victoria Market in Melbourne it seemed so different to every other market I had seen. It was almost identical to the Como market - Italian influence mmmmm. The trip via train along the Aosta valley was wonderful...

Aug 18, 2006 - Mont Blanc and Alps

Hello, from St. Moritz, SE Switzerland. A rainy, restful day in a peaceful ,kind home. Our story has been jumbled lately so I will hop you through the highlights and impressions. After "over doing it a little" in the Pyreneese we "over did it a little" in the Spanish Mediterranean town of Cadaques, famous for its Dali painting scenes and lively atmosphere. Ellian flew to Britain, Andre and I hopped across France by train. However, late in the hop the trains stopped, the station closed and sleeping outside in the park we were rudely...

May 30, 2006 - Aosta, Italy

We awoke, well rested in Chamonix, France. We decided we would go figure out how to get to Aosta, Italy. As we stepped out of our hotel, we suddenly realized that it was snowing!!! There was no snow on the ground, but it was snowing indeed. We walked up the street and realized that the fog was too thick, and the snow too heavy to ride the cable car over, so we decided to bus it. Fortunately, God smiled on us again and we had 15mintues to get our things, check out of our hotel and then get back to the bus. Thankfully we made it. When our...
