Jul 8, 2018 - Chamonix

A fantastic day in Chamonix today! The day was just perfect to get high into the Alps. We started the day by taking the cable car up Auguille du Midi - a mountain over 12,000 feet high not far from Mont Blanc. It took two cable car rides to get close to the top and then an elevator ride, inside the mountain to get to the summit. The views back down to Chamonix and of the surrounding alps were tremendous. After lunch we took a train ride to Montenvers Mer de Glacé, again high in the alps to see a glacier. The glacier has retreated so much...

Jul 7, 2018 - Chamonix

Had a good drive to Chamonix this morning. Most of the journey was on motorways but the last 50klm was on very challenging winding and narrow roads. Hotel is about 15 minute walk from the town centre - lovely day today but forecast to be cloudy tomorrow. Photos attached today are from last few days.

Jun 4, 2016 - Saturday off to Chamonix (again) to conquer Mont Blanc

We looked at the weather and took a chance. Off to Mont Blanc. Near vertical cable cars took us to the top - finally. A few minutes after take off we got stuck. Stopping is the bad part as the cage you are in SWAYS. After a little while the bloke says we need to go back down again to do a 'global check'. Not sure about that. After a few minutes off we go again, so good to be moving ah, bother, stopped AGAIN - the SWAYING in mid air. Thought we might need a solar system check, but no off we go again without any more stoppages. We were so...

Jun 3, 2016 - Friday in Chamonix

The clouds, the rain - go to the montain Mohomad, anyway. We can't complain considering the mess this rain is making of other people's lives here. We had heard a lot about Chamonix from George and were keen to see it and the associated famous mountain. Not today for the Mont though as it was clouded in. Wandering around the streets I was looking for Christine. I was sure the woman in the distance in the green raincoat (unique in Europe) was her. Hence I was surprised when the 6 or 7 mature aged women nearby sheltering from the rain with me...

Tour Du Mount Blanc. French, Italian and Swizz Alps An amazing 8 day trek traversing the Alps. Aug 3, 2012 - Day 7 our last hike

Today was another challenge. We started our hike at 9:20 am and headed uphill for 4 miles with a 3000 ft elevation gain. Awesome views as always. Some places we had to hang on railings to maintain our balance on the ledges..we made it to the refuge by noon for our first lunch with some nice hot coffee..It was cooler at the top with temp about 60 degrees only and when the winds picked up it cooled us down substantially. On the way up we saw a couple of deer and another ibex who put on quite a show for us. At the top of our destination we had...

Aug 2, 2012 - DAY 6 Hiking another part of tour de Mt Blanc

We started today promptly at 830 and headed up the trail led by our hike leader, Oliver. It was quite a bit uphill once again...about 740 meters or 2200 ft. We hiked until noon before reaching Mama's refuge..here we enjoyed magnificent scenery of the alps..all of us started to sing "the hills are alive with the sound of music" just like Maria in the sound of music. We even took photos of ourselves posing on the very green hillside with the mountains in the background..too awesome to describe in words. We hiked 9 miles again today with...

Aug 2, 2012 - Day 5 Day Off Trip to Annecy

We had a free day from hiking today. Off we all went by van to the town of Annecy, which is the capital of the Savoie region of France. This is a large town with a huge clean lake for sailing, paddleboating and boating. Annecy is known as the "venice of france" because of its canals lined with colorful arrangements of flowers and small shops selling their merchandise. We had 4 hrs to here to explore, have a nice lunch, and do some shopping. The park was filled with locals enjoying the start of their holiday with their children. Tomorrow...

Jul 31, 2012 - Day 4 Hiking the French Alps

Today's hike was the most challenging of all according to Oliver, our hike leader. We reached the highest altitude of all the hikes. We climbed 3000 ft and hikes over 7 miles according to my pedometer. Our hike was full of views in every direction...We could see the point on top of the mountain where Swiss, French, and Italian Alps meet . On our uphill journey we spotted a Ibex nearby. She was too scared of all of us and all the other hikers on this busy track. Later we saw a marmot who also posed for a picture. We hiked up to the refuge...

Jul 30, 2012 - Day 3 hiking the Italian Alps

Today was absolutely the most beautiful hike I have ever been on my entire life. We drove through the tunnel (about 10 mile tunnel) from France to Italy and hiked all day with fantastic views of Mt Blanc, glaciers, valleys filled with an awesome variety of wildflowers. We got to a refuge on top of the slopes and enjoyed cappucino and the most delicious chocolate/plum tart. We continued our traverse across the rolling green hills. There was so much to see and everything was so photogenic..i took over 200 pics just today alone! This evening...

Jul 29, 2012 - Day 1 Chamonix

My flight from JFK to Geneva was a smooth ride. We arrived 1/2 hr early and when I got off the plane, Lorna, Larry and Russ were waiting for me in the terminal. We had some time to kill before Oliver our hike leader was due to meet all of us at the airport to shuttle us to Les Houches. So we enjoyed some expresso cafe to keep us awake. After everyone arrived we got to our lodge, Chalet Savoy. Then we were off to explore the nearby town of Chamonix. We picked a nice place to sit outside for lunch, wine and beer. Later it started raining...

Jul 29, 2012 - Day 2 Le Tour Cul de Balsame

We had a great hike to Col de Balmes today. It was quite misty and cloudy when we started so all of the hikers really appreciated it when the clouds lifted and gave us a quick peak of Mt Blanc with its snow cap and glacier ice and waterfalls. We hiked 7 hrs and covered almost 9 miles with a 2300 ft elevation gain. With the humidity it proved to be a challenge for some of us New Mexicans for sure. Hikers on our trip are really nice folks of all ages from Canada, Australia, India and various places in the US. I could not load pics from today...
