Apr 23, 2009 - Zermatt - Chamonix, The Bonus Day
After a leisurely breakfast we packed everything back up and set out for the lifts. We'd then be picked up by a shuttle bus for the trip back to Chamonix. ... He was right! Our waiter was a hoot! The shuttle arrived right on time and we set off for the 2 hour drive back to Chamonix through the Aosta valley. ... Well, here we are at the end of day 2, we haven’t left Chamonix yet and we’ve now used pretty much all of the new gear we bought. ... We were totally soaked by then but luckily a train arrived right away to take us back to Chamonix. ... Whew, what a day! After breakfast (where Bob L told us the secret to boiling the perfect egg at Chamonix elevation), we walked through Chamonix to the Aiguille du Midi Telepherique on the opposite side of the valley from Le Brevent. ... It was actually a bit of a relief to go up and give some different muscles a chance to work! Before we knew it we were at the top and waiting for the train that would take us 900m down to Chamonix. ... We got together in the sunshine for the mandatory end of day beer and checked out maps of our route for the next few days.Whew, what a day! We piled into a van that James had arranged and were driven the 2 hours to Chamonix,France crossing the Swiss border on the way. ... It was about 15 C as we walked with our skis to Le Brevent tram, right in Chamonix. ... We spent a few hours riding the lifts and enjoying the spring skiing (tele-slushing!) and worked our way from Le Brevent over to La Flegere which is above a town further down the valley from Chamonix. ... enjoyed some good biking in switzerland and climbing on the handeck slabs (something we always wanted to do) and in grimselpass. Climbed to within 200m of the matterhorn in poor conditions, the weather has been v unsettled! currently in chamonix attempting to try and snatch some routes in between the bad weather. ...
