Aug 14, 2006 - Brittany

Lets just say that whenever I looked out of the car window, I saw one of three things whizzing past - trees, villages, or harvested grain fields. I took advantage of the monotony to catch-up on my sleep, but did occasionally help Mom and Dad navigate by looking for elusive street signs when necessary. We had picked-up our Peugeot 307 and were heading west from Paris. Our first stop was the famously beautiful Versailles Palace. It started to rain heavily just as we were trying to find the ticket booth, but after consulting with "information"...

May 23, 2006 - Nantes, France

We landed in Nantes, France early in the morning of the 23rd and we were immediately hit that we could no longer speak the language. We were flipping through our phrase book as we exited the plane trying to remember how to just say "hello" and "do you speak english." We are so glad we bought that book! We then navigated our way to the Europecar depot downtown, and picked up our sweet, baby-blue Toyota Yaris. 2 doors and 2 feet wide! We then made our way to Dinan, our first French walled city. But our first prioity was our stomachs. We...

4 Weeks in Europe

Jun 17, 2005 - Loire Valley - Saumur, Chinon, Azay-le-Rideau, Loches, Amboise and Blois

We are now in the lovely Loire Vally - the place that launched a thousand travel guides. The ride we are doing is from Lonely Planet's Cycling France Guide called the Chateaux Explorer and that's exactly what we've been doing. (Although, really, for Marcus it's all just another chapter in Cheese Exploring.) We had to catch a train from a town near Mont St Michel to get to the start of the ride in Saumur. You've already heard our thoughts on the French rail system and bikes so we won't go into it again, except to say that it was a bit...

Jun 13, 2005 - On the Train to Rennes

Now that Michael is feeling better, I am sick. I blame it on the rugby hooligans - more on that later. As I don't have the same health history as Michael, there is less chance I will develop pneumonia or strep throat, so I have not been to see the doctor. But since I don't get sick as often as Michael, I don't handle it as well either - I tend to go to bed for two or three days, but that has not been possible. So catching the train this morning was pretty miserable, but now we're well on our way and I'm looking forward to resting up at Mont...

Jun 28, 2004 - At last she is launched!

June - July 2004 We arrived in Les Sables 8 days before the yacht was ready to be launched. For a start they had booked us into a SPA about 5 ks out of town which was in the wrong place and a 10 Euro cab ride away. We really wanted to be in the port area. When they gave us a room which was heavily polluted with smoke and couldn't/wouldn't change it we checked out again and managed to get into the 2 star Admiral Hotel right in Port Orlona. Mrs Rogers owned it with her husband and they really looked after us for nearly a month. Why so long,...
