Sep 6, 2011 - Going to Pot-La Roche-sur-Yon

Tuesday 6th September 2011 Weather:-19 degrees/cloudy Yesterday we had a lazy day pottering around Peter’s Place. The only journey into the outside world was to revisit the local Hospital to pay our bill which we assumed would be quite high considering the different test that they did on me. France does not have a reciprocal agreement with Australia regarding Health Services, which incidentally Australia does have with Italy. To our amazement the bill for all the tests that I had (including administering 2 potassium capsules) came to...

Aug 31, 2011 - Les Pineaux

Wednesday 31st August 2011 Weather:-22—25degrees/Lovely for travelling It is Herman’s 69th birthday today and thank you for all the Happy Birthday wishes. He is feeling a lot better after a good night and a half sleep. The concentration needed yesterday to not be pushed into rock face on the side of the road by the oncoming Kamikaze drivers straddling the centre line—especially as he was feeling lousy—made us rethink our itinerary (Motor Ways rather than Minor Roads) so we headed straight to Peter’s place in Les Pineaux, Vendee Region,...

Apr 11, 2010 - Wynands & Schelvis, Master Plumbers?

Sunday 11th April 2010 Weather:-Sunshine-14 degrees Les Pineaux Getting out of bed is starting to happen later in the day, this morning it was close to eight a.m. a leisurely breakfast of porridge was followed by a dash to the Bellangerie (baker) for fresh bread sticks; the baguettes are delicious, just break a bit off and eat it without anything on. Before we went out the boys inspected their handiwork (plumbing) that they did yesterday. Peter bought 4 different types of glue/cement and after a bit of translating from French to English...

Apr 10, 2010 - Les Pineaux Day 2

Saturday 10th April 2010 Weather:-Beautiful Sunshine-17 degrees Les Pineaux Day 2 Peter is a very thoughtful host, he always finds us different hardware shops to go to, all in different directions from his place—that way we get to see something of the country side in our travels. After yesterdays episode with the therapeutic showers they did ban me for a time from accompanying them to another hardware store but today they decided that it was in their interest to let me come....They tried to tell me that these trips to the hardware shop were...

Apr 9, 2010 - Water, Water, Everywhere

Friday 9th April 2010 Weather:-Sunshine-14 degrees Les Pineaux-Day 1 Bits and pieces were needed to fix the obvious leaking joints under kitchen cupboards in the Gite'; Peter has a long 'outbuilding' alongside his house and from side view it could pass for a very large 4 car garage. One end faces the street and is near the top of a hill and the other end is at the bottom of a slope and to keep the building level underneath the full length of it there is a very long cellar. At the lower end there are large barn doors where he keeps his...

Apr 8, 2010 - Paris to Les Pineaux

Thursday 8th April 2010 Weather:-Sunshine-15.5 degrees Charles de Gaulle Airport to Les Pineaux, France 493k=4:39h An early awaking in the Ibis-Charles de Gaulle put a full stop to the first disappointing stay at an Accor hotel since we have used them in our travels. We have up to now not had any reason to complain whatever price we have paid, most of the time we have struck some bargain prices but this time in the Novotel Bruges (excellent, top marks) and the Ibis-Charles de Gaulle there were no bargains to be had. Because of the state of...

Jun 1, 2009 - Le Petit Breuil

Mon 1st June---Weather:-Pleasant/24 degrees Bourges to Les Pineaux (395km) (4:03h) The Ibis hotel that we stayed at in Bourges gets our top marks in friendliness and service-especially as they offer budget pricing. Our drive to Peters’ place was done in a leisurely manner today as we knew that Peter had left Edinburg yesterday in his camping-car and that he was not expecting to arrive to his place until mid afternoon. Our travels today took us past low hills used as farming country with low fields of wheat and nice straight lines of...
