Aug 27, 2013 - Quiet day in Maubeuge

We had a relaxed day. Betsy and I went shopping in the morning , while Brian and Rob went for a long bike ride out to Colin's workplace. We all went for lunch at Subway! Had a siesta and then went to the zoo. The zoo exceeded our expectations with lots of exotic animals, quite large and well maintained grounds, etc. Went out for supper at The Creperie Bretton, which was very good. Back to the hotel for an early night since we check out and move on to Brussels tomorrow. Stumbled across a TV show about Norway ( all in Spanish!) so we had to...

Aug 26, 2013 - A day of Cycling

We started our day with a quick but tasty breakfast at the hotel. Colin walked over from his company housing and we drove to his workplace, Skulfort, which is a few minutes out of Maubeuge. We were given a tour of the facility by Colin and his co-worker, William. The company manufactures equipment used to maintain the wheels of light rail lines. Brian and I rented bicycles from the Tourist office. We cycled about 13 km along the Sambre River with Rob and Betsy to a town on the Belgian border to check the location of the train station since...

Started the day with a train journey from Aachen, which is in Germany, but right at the border where Germany, France and Belgium merge. We arrived at Mons in the early afternoon and we very pleased to be meet by Colin, Rob and Betsy. They had a rental car and whisked us back to the town of Maubeuge where they had reserved a hotel room for us, at the Ibis, where they are also staying. The guys had a beer break while Betsy and I checked out the street market, but didn't make any purchases. We had a short siesta and then went out for dinner at...

May 31, 2010 - 3rd Day in Maubeuge (Monday)

Our last day with Noelle and Phillipe. Noelle took us around the city of Maubeuge, saw the fortress of the city, along with a drawbridge that was used during the war. Noelle loves the history of her country and she really enjoys sharing it with us. We then went back home for some lunch and then off to the airport in Belgium for our flight to Porto. We flew out of Brussels South Charleroi Airport in Charleroi (about 29 miles from Brussels). We flew on Ryan Air (Europe's largest discount airline) and there must have been a thousand people...

May 30, 2010 - 2nd Day in Maubeuge (Sunday)

Today we drove, with Noelle and Philippe to Reims. We visited Notre-Dame de Reims (Our Lady of Rheims), the Roman Catholic cathedral of Reims, where the kings of France were once crowned. It replaces an older church, destroyed by a fire in 1211, which was built on the site of the basilica where Clovis was baptized by Saint Remi, bishop of Reims, in AD 496. We enjoyed the church as Noelle gave us a tour of it. She is very knowledgeable about the French history and it is fun learning about it. We then had a very good lunch at Le Colibri...
